JAMB Registrar, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde

The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board has received the approval of the Federal Government to shift the 2011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination from Saturday, June 11, 2011 to Saturday, June 18, 2011.

The approval was conveyed to JAMB via a letter to the Registrar, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde.

According to a statement issued by the examination’s body in Abuja, on Thursday, JAMB explained that government believed the change became inevitable as a result of the clash in date with the ongoing National Examination Council.

The statement read in part, “For instance, sizeable students who have applied to write UTME would also be sitting for the National Examinations Council’s Biology (Practicals) on Friday, 10th June, 2011, and as such, may not be able to travel after their NECO examinations to sit for the scheduled 2011 UTME on Saturday, 11th June, 2011.

“The Government, therefore is mindful of the fact that ‘the Board has been inundated with requests from parents of children who choose towns outside their present locations to reconsider and shift date to 18th June, 2011 as against the earlier fixed date for the 2011 UTME.”

JAMB earmarks 2,823 exam centres for 2011 UTME

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has earmarked a total of 2, 823 examination centres nationwide for the conduct of the 2011 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled for June 11.

Every centre is expected to be man by, at least, three personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as part of efforts aimed at curbing examination malpractices.

Registrar and Chief Executive of the Board, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde, said this, when he met with the leadership of the NSCDC, led by the Deputy Commandant General, Mr Evans Ewurum, in Abuja, in order to fine-tune security arrangements for the forthcoming UTME.

Ojerinde, however, expressed confidence in the abilities of the NSDC based on its previous performances during the conduct the board’s examinations in the past.

The JAMB Registrar had as well approached the police high command to call for police involvement in the monitoring of the forthcoming UTME, in view of the ugly trend of invasion of examination halls by hoodlums recorded in some of the centres in the past.

He noted that every effort to conduct smooth and hitch-free examination would be in vain without proper security arrangement being put in place.

He also revealed that scanners would be used to screen candidates before entering the examination halls and stressed the need for NSDC officers who would be working with JAMB to master the art of using hand-held scanners.
