5 Dangerous Driving Habits You Need To Avoid by Presegs(m): 10:55am On Oct 25, 2021
The number of road accidents across the country rounds up into tens of thousands every year. And most of the time, bad driving habits are the main culprit. Unfortunately, in almost every aspect of life, bad habits are temptingly easy to pick up. It may be your friend taking calls behind the wheels or your dad turning corners with only one hand on the wheel.

Either way, we often pick up these dangerous driving habits without knowing that they aren't the best practices. So it's necessary to recognize and avoid them at all costs since they increase the risk of getting into an accident or collision. IJAM Autos lists the top 5 worst driving habits we see and why you should avoid them.

1. Driving Under the Influence

According to the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), about 90 per cent of road accidents in the country result from alcohol abuse and hard drugs. These substances impair reasoning and reflexes and cause the driver to make wrong driving decisions.
As a good driver, it's necessary to be intentional and disciplined with your safety on the road. So whenever you feel intoxicated and need to drive, take a cab or designate a sober driver instead.
Otherwise, you could face the undesirable consequences that result from drunk driving, such as court fees and fines, property damages and possible injuries to yourself and other road users.
You could even go to jail. So consider your options thoroughly next time you feel you can't drive.

2. Distracted Driving

Distracted driving is any activity that steals the driver's attention away from the road. It could be sending a text message, answering a phone call, adjusting the radio, surfing the internet, or eating while driving.
Either way, most of these distractions emanate from the usage of your smartphone. Unfortunately, these attention-demanding activities on your tiny device can compromise your safety on the road.
Listening to your favourite songs on your car stereo
can be another source of distraction. It's even worse when you have your earplugs on.
You may be shutting out essential traffic disturbances like car horns, emergency vehicle sirens, or railroad-crossing alarms.
To enhance safety while driving, avoid multitasking, keep away from your phone and make the necessary vehicle adjustments before or after your trip, not during.

3. Speeding

Road Transport Data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics reveals that speed violation is responsible for most motor accidents, which amounts to 44.44% of the total road crashes reported.
Speeding has been a leading cause of motor vehicle collisions and fatalities for decades. Drivers who go faster than the posted speed limit increase their chances of getting into an accident since it takes longer to stop or slow down.
You could be running late to work or hurrying to meet up with another schedule, regardless of the situation, always abide by the speed limit. It's better late than never.

4. Driving Without a Seatbelt

Many collisions occur every day on the road, and many times, the proper use of safety restraints have saved lives. Seatbelts are one of those necessary restraints. Wearing a seatbelt protects you from severe injuries in the event of a car crash. Yet, many drivers don't recognize the importance of wearing one. Maybe you don't feel like wearing a seatbelt because you're driving a short distance around town. Or because you feel that seatbelts are uncomfortable and restrict movement.

These seatbelt misconceptions are dangerous. Buckling up is one of the easiest ways to keep safe on the road, whether you're going on a road trip or just driving around the corner.

5. Driving in Bad Weather

Bad weather conditions can affect even the most experienced drivers. Driving in the rain, fog, or snow comes with additional difficulties and requires more control and concentration. While it is possible to drive in bad weather, the best practice is to avoid it. But if you must drive, you have to slow down.

In rainy weather, make sure you avoid potholes and water pools by the road edge, which may disguise hazards. Also, use your headlights and make sure your tires have adequate traction to overcome the wet floors. When driving in the fog, always use low beam headlights instead of regular or high beam lights. And since there is little visibility, leave your signals on longer than you usually would so that other road users can see and recognize them.

Final Thoughts

If you want to become a better driver and take control of your safety on the road, you have to start now to eliminate these bad driving habits and cultivate positive ones. But, again, consistency is all you need. You can drive with even more peace of mind when you know that you're implementing the best driving practices.
