Dude Nigeria never granted them independence the area of southern cameroon was part of German Cameroon after world war 1 was administered by the British colonial Nigeria as an international territory. The independence of Nigeria put them in a precarious position hence a plebiscite was carried out in 1961 for them to decide either to go for Cameroon or Nigeria. The lie that was spread that it was the fear of igbo domination that made them go for Cameroon needs to be busted here. First off in 1954 the British gave the autonomous status because technically they are not a british territory but were just administered by the British. Their capital then was Buea in Cameroon, they had their own assembly, though because they were administered by the British then most of the colonial officer came from colonial Eastern Nigeria and most of their citizens schooled in Eastern Nigeria like one of their first leaders Endeley who schooled at Government College Umuahia and Yabatech also some of them also served in the Nigerian army.
