Quite true.... Sadly, Buhari is the grand patron of that table you just smashed! undecided

How is Buhari the grand patron?

He has every right to blame Goodluck for the battered economy he inherited.

The economy Buhari inherited could no longer pay salaries, had expended lion shares of an embarrassing budget combating terrorism and insecurity in its entirety with nothing to show for it, and had not diversified the economy away from oil.

Buhari inherited an oil-dependent economy which imported far more than it exported, which meant it was always at the mercy of soaring oil prices. When oil price slumped, it was natural that the economy would go into a recession since it had no other sources from which to draw revenues to sustain itself. Moreover, the United States have found oil, and no longer needed our oil. That is a loss of a major market.

We are in this mess today not because Buhari replaced Goodluck, but because we are oil-dependent. Our national development have been funded by oil (not even taxation). When oil price slumped, we found ourselves struggling to survive.

Even countries like Saudi Arabia who are accused of being oil-dependent still have a vibrant tourism industry, which they fell upon when their fortune began to dwindle. But we have only oil.

We are borrowing today because of the misfortune which again befell oil in 2018. Now, we are beginning to desperately look for other means (other than oil) to generate revenues, including taxing everything taxable, even untaxable. The naira is free falling because of our import-reliant status. We don't export anything of worth, all we do is import. Buhari is justified to blame everyone for the mess he inherited.

But in the case of Anthony Joshua, he has only himself to blame. He underrated Ruiz in the rematch, and never upgraded to be at par with Usyk. If at all he has to blame someone, then he can blame his coach.

Guy just keep quiet if you have nothing sensible to say! You can get away with blaming GEJ for the first 4 years but Buhari's failures in his second term is his OWN damn fault! He is a specialist in failure and how long will you continue blaming oil price? Oil is at the highest in over 5 years now, oil is not responsible for killer unknown gunmens, it is not responsible for failing to fix or build refineries and it is definitely not responsible for kidnappings. I know you are a very confident guy so can you list Buhari's achievement and compare it to his campaign promises? Even the most die hard supporter of Buhari would cover his or her head in shame!

You missed the whole point of my post.

The point is that we are oil-dependent. And anything that happens to oil will affect us tremendously.

Also, we are import-reliant. Otherwise, we would tackle issues of inflation much more easily.

Even if oil sold high now, oil market for Nigerian oil has dwindled. Coupled with insurgency and insecurity which has expended the bulk of our defense budget since 2011, we are in a terrible situation.

The whole problem is tied to our oil dependence not Buhari.

Like Soludo prophesied in 2014, whoever wins the 2015 election will struggle.

You are the one still missing the point, the president is the number one citizen in the country, he is numero uno, the commander in chief. Failure to build refineries, failure to diversify is HIS FAULT! How long would we continue giving leaders free pass and blame previous administrations? Where does accountability begin? It's been 6 f*cking years now, are things better now than in 2015? Come off it my friend, come off it!

What would you have done differently?

I want a honest answer.

You are in charge of an oil dependent developing country battling insurgency, and import-reliance, and a fast dwindling oil market. Then just when you have pulled out of a recession, oil price slumps again. You are pulling your weight together, and then COVID-19 happens.

How would you make conspicuous progress even in 10 years?

Would you borrow to build refineries for an oil whose substantial market has practically disappeared? How would you diversify the economy in 10 years? We are talking about an economy that has been oil-dependent for over 40 years. How do you make an import-reliant country balance trade in 10 years, and with disappearing revenue sources?

Please, be honest.

Reduce wastage(What exactly did we borrow money for?)! If there was no other choice than to borrow then the borrowed funds must be used to invest in security, refineries and other meaningful infrastructural developments. No country thrives on insecurity and cluelessness. You keep mentioning oil price decline but oil was sub $50 per barrel when Buhari took over, now it is over $80 per barrel, how long would we continue blaming oil price?

Furthermore, did Buhari and his team show any sign of diversifying from oil? They took control, did their feasibility studies and were well versed in the shortcomings of GEJ's administration, what exactly did they learn from it? What was the plan? You asked would I borrow to build refineries? Is it not better than to borrow money to fund political trips and stomach infastructure? How can a country that produces crude oil be held ransom by those that are refining it to the point that the government has to subsidize prices? RIDICULOUS!

Finally, Rome was not built in a day! You can't fail on 90% of your campaign promises and still have the guts to ask Nigerians to trust you. With all of Bubu's fault, if he took care of insecurity and refineries alone, he would have cemeneted his place in Nigeria's history books as the best president ever instead of this charade and demented style of leadership!

It is all common sense. If you don't want to heavily tax your people, you will have to borrow.

If there was no other choice than to borrow then the borrowed funds must be used to invest in security, refineries and other meaningful infrastructural developments.

And you think we have not been investing in security?

Please, criticise constructively.

As for refineries. I hope you know that it would be stupid to use borrowed funds to build refineries at this critical period where our oil market is practically nonexistent?

How many buyers of our oil do you know? Hope you know we now struggle to sell our oil?

No country thrives on insecurity and cluelessness. You keep mentioning oil price decline but oil was sub $50 per barrel when Buhari took over, now it is over $80 per barrel, how long would we continue blaming oil price?

I did not just mention dwindling oil price. I mentioned dwindling oil market for Nigerian oil. We practically have no markets for our oil.

It is wasting away without buyers. Our largest market, USA now has her own oil.

The reason why I mentioned the dwindling oil price is because it was the factor (coupled with import-reliance and oil dependence) that threw us into recession which we are still struggling to put behind us.

Whether oil sells at over 100 dollars per barrel now, the damage has been done, and it is not a damage you rectify in 8 years even if you are Abraham Lincoln.

Furthermore, did Buhari and his team show any sign of diversifying from oil?

Prioritization of agriculture, tax holidays in the mining industry, and ICT programs via channels like NPower.

They took control, did their feasibility studies and were well versed in the shortcomings of GEJ's administration, what exactly did they learn from it?

They learnt that corruption is a major problem hampering our progress.

In fact, in January 2015, the Economist sounded a note of warning to GEJ about a terrible recession coming. They gave GEJ two pieces of advice:

1. Fight corruption

2. Save.

GEJ had done neither of these for 5 years. Before him, Yar'Adua had entered into an amnesty program that strained our budgets. Before Yar'Adua, Obasanjo had squandered billions on uninterrupted power supply which turned out a sham, and concentrated money in the hands of a few billionaires. These governments ate up our tomorrow, and impoverished millions of Nigerians.

What was the plan?

To fight corruption. But corruption fought back. This, coupled with deep-seated tribalism, made the corruption fight a waste of time.

You asked would I borrow to build refineries? Is it not better than to borrow money to fund political trips and stomach infastructure?

Building refineries at this critical period is not feasible. The private sector may come in, but the government should be more concerned about diversifying from oil, and not building refineries for oil that has practically not significant market.

How can a country that produces crude oil be held ransom by those that are refining it to the point that the government has to subsidize prices? RIDICULOUS!

That again is a blame for past governments. There is nothing we can do now. We can't make a desperate attempt to build refineries.

Finally, Rome was not built in a day! You can't fail on 90% of your campaign promises and still have the guOcts to ask Nigerians to trust you. With all of Bubu's fault, if he took care of insecurity and refineries alone, he would have cemeneted his place in Nigeria's history books as the best president ever instead of this charade and demented style of leadership!

Buhari did well with insecurity when he came in. Boko Haram wa technically defeated. They resorted to attacking villages. Before Buhari came in, Boko Haram were bombing major cities. But Buhari decimated them, and reduced them to attacking villages. There might have been a resurgence in attacks, but it is a fact that Islamic terrorism is the most difficult to crush. With over 1 billion dollars, the United States could not destroy Al-Queda.

Buhari is trying, considering the situation. Imagine he came in 2011, and not on the eve of a terrible recession.

Sorry you're not making any sense! Is Nigeria not part of OPEC? I would advise you to go and look at their charter and realize how ignorant it sounds to suggest Nigeria does not have avenues to sell it's crude oil. U.S has always had oil but it rarely ever touches it, our biggest buyer when it comes to oil has always been Europe and Asia, I fail to see any data that suggests sales from those areas are slowing. Furthermore, can you state the cost of subsidies and importing petroleum? The savings that could be gained from those two wasteful ventures is enough to build one or two refineries. Sorry but science and data does not support your argument!

Your rhetoric baffles me, he crushed boko haram yet the North is still not peaceful, he traded boko haram for unknown killer gunmen, kidnappers and murdering Fulani herdsmen. You are not being honest with yourself if you believe the security situation of this country is better now than in 2011 or 2015. Boko Haram was a regional problem in 2011 and 2015 now we have a national problem with kidnappings, killers roaming freely all over the nation.

Finally, let me get this straight, you are claiming it was necessary to move us from about 7 million dollars in debt in 2015 to 33 million in debt in 2021, over 350% increase in our debt obligations because we are in a recession plus fighting extremists and dwindling income?

Can you show me one economic sector that has benefit from this death trap?

We all know in a recession, government must borrow but usually the result becomes apparent in a few months to a year. So let's compare the data:

What was the unemployment rate in 2015? What is it now?
What was the inflation rate in 2015? What is it now?
What was the exchange rate in 2015? What is it now?
Compare food prices in 2015 to now? Some items have risen over 1000% and you sit here with a straight face defending this man?

Buhari is trying you said, he is trying to do what exactly? Ruin the country through poverty and starvation? You can keep blaming past governments all you want but once again data is not on your side. Obasanjo left the best economy we had seen in a very long time, we actually boast of one of the largest growing economy in the world, Ya'rdua barely lasted 18 months, so the only true excuse was GEJ.

This is simple, can you show me any oil producing nation that cannot refine its own oil? You used USA as an example so let me do the same, they borrowed huge amount to come out of a recession, they fought war against terrorists and also have their own internal issues but guess what? The funds borrowed resulted in huge gains for the economy especially the areas of unemployment and social welfare. You said the damages Nigeria received cannot be rectified in 10 years, so what is your estimation for seeing improvement? 20 years, 40 years, 100 years or 500 years? Okay let's forget improvement at least maintain the status quo, what the f*ck happened to the exchange rate? Food prices? It's a good thing that you're Nigerian and arguing on a Nigerian website, if you typed this rubbish on international forums or in front of intellectuals, they might certify you as delusional.....In fact I've already given you too much time....PEACE!
