In some countries like India and Israel, the Prime minister possess more power than President which is somewhat ceremonial, while in Russia and China, The President has more power than the Prime. Even the time Nigeria practiced parliamentary system of government, the Prime minister was more powerful than the president. Why is it that way or is it just semantics??

It depends on the constitution of the country. In reality, the prime minister is just head of government. The President is commander in Chief of the armed forces What a lot of people dont seem to know is that while the Prime minister may seem to be powerful, the president can remove the prime minister, but the prime minister cannot remove the president 3 Likes |

gidgiddy: From what I know, in the parliamentary system of government, the Prime minister has more power than the president, but most countries that practice presidential system of government doesn't even have a prime minister, so the president has all the power. Now my question is, why would a country that practice presidential system still have a Prime minister who should only appear in a parliamentary system.?? Starcrest1: One thing you should bear in mind is that it is the President who controls the armed forces. The prime minister controls no armed force. So no matter how powerful any prime minister may seem to look, the president can command the Army or police to take down the Prime at any time |

While serving as PM, Vladimir Putin was more powerful than the elected President, Dmitri Medvedev and after the latter was appointed as PM and Putin stepped in as President, the status quo was maintained  |

In Germany, the President was just a symbol of unification of Germany Rep. Italy president approve the PM post or other form of things but the PM controls the military just like Queen of British don’t have power the PM control. Most countries that use President and PM mostly doesn’t have a Vice President The PM is the Vice President in most cases |
