Corruption in Nigeria is a constant phenomenon. In 2012, Nigeria was estimated to have lost over $400 billion to corruption since its independence, today it is over $50 trillion. In 2018, the country ranked 144th in the 180 countries listed in Transparency International's Corruption Index (with Somalia, at 180th, being the most corrupt, and Denmark the least)

Nigerian politicians find themselves in a strong position of power and wealth due to their connections with the oil and gas industries in Nigeria. Although some of them have resorted to going the extra mile by embezzling funds meant for its poor citizenry such as pension funds and poverty alleviation funds which the government doles out to through various schemes to assist lift the masses out of abject poverty.

Oil and gas exports account for over 90% of all Nigerian export revenues. While many politicians own or have shares in these industries, tax revenues from the energy sector are diminished and the benefits of Nigeria's energy wealth is not evenly distributed throughout the country.

Since the coming of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2015, a number of Nigerian politicians and political leaders with corruption cases hanging on their necks have found a haven in the ruling party, All Progressives Congress(APC). The defection of such political leaders to the APC has automatically stalled prosecution of their corruption cases – a pattern that negates the self-acclaimed anti-corruption campaign of the present regime.

The glaring impunity with which the current ruling government involves itself in embezzlement and corruption is disastrous and undeserving of the Nigerian people. During the 2019 elections, Adams Oshiomhole, a former National Chairman of the APC had announced that those who joined the ruling party would have their "sins" forgiven. He encouraged more politicians in opposition parties to toe the path of some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who had defected to the APC at that time; Some of those that have been forgiven so far by the corrupt Buhari regime are;

Lt Gen Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.), a former chief of army staff, was connected to the $2.1 billion embezzlement scam arms deal involving the former National security advisor, Sambo Dasuki.

Adebayo Alao-Akala, a former governor of Oyo state in 2019 was involved in a N11.5 billion fraud and embezzlement scandal.

Orji Uzor Kali, a former governor of Abia state was involved in money laundering schemes up to the tune of N3.2 billion.

Stella Oduah was also involved in over N9.4 billion fraud during her tenure as minister for aviation.

Senator Godswill Akpabio, a former governor of Awka Ibom state and current minister of Niger Delta affairs, was involved in diversion of state funds up to the tune of N100 billion during his tenure as governor of the oil rich state; He is also involved in a N40 billion fraud in the Niger Delta development commission.

Joshua Dariye, former governor of Plateau state has also been accused of diverting N1.12 billion from the state government's ecological fund

The most recent happening is that of Abdulrasheed Maina, the former chairman of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team who was convicted after he was found guilty of money laundering.
Maina laundered funds up to the tune of N171 million and diverted up to N2.3 billion to personal accounts. With choice properties in Abuja worth billions of dollars.

Sometimes when one thinks about all these I wonder where we are headed. What can the populace do to end this criminality by elected officials? Is this how we are going to be?

Thoughts about the heroic but bloody exploits by Ghanaian Late Captain J J Rawlings during his glory days keep coming to my mind., but I'm not sure its feasible in this country because of greed.
