ERRONEOUS REVENGE: LIFE STORY

Dictionary defines revenge as "the action of hurting or harming someone in return for an injury or wrong suffered at their hands." It becomes erroneous revenge when someone miscalculates the source of his/her harm or injury and goes ahead to launch retaliation on a wrong person guessed to be responsible. Revenge is a bad thing to do let alone the erroneous one. God even said we should leave vengeance for Him when we are unjustly hurt. On the contrary, some people today have seen vengeance as a normal thing and they even perpetrate it erroneously, hurting innocent souls. Let's use this short fictional case story as an example for clarity.

Four communities(Alabode, Alagbada, Alamala and Alagbede) were neighbours and the four of them were not in good terms with one another, struggling for supremacy. The enmity was most intense between Alabode and Alagbede because of their large sizes, both by populations and land areas. An attack was launched on Alagbede community in a night by unknown gunmen. These unknown gunmen were actually from Alamala community but this was unknown to Alagbede. Several inhabitants of Alagbede community were massacred while several others were seriously injured. Alagbede community leaders did not think twice before concluding that the attack was launched by Alabode community. The King and the community Chiefs summoned their warriors to plan, prepare and launch an earth-shaking reprisal attack on Alabode community. The village heads went a step further by saying it was high time they conquered, overthrew and took over Alabode community. The heads promised to follow the war squad and asked other youths of the community to follow as well in order to reinforce the squad operations.

They indeed left for Alabode community to launch a reprisal attack but met stiff resistance from Alabode warriors and youths. There was a fierce gunfire that led to the death of several Alagbede soldiers and the civilian youths who were forced to go to war with them. The War Commander and few of their community Chiefs were also killed in the process. The lucky King and the remaining soldiers didn't have a choice but to retreat and run back to their community. Unfortunately, on their way coming back, they were easily overpowered and captured by the teeming soldiers of Alamala community who had laid ambush on them since they left for Alabode. Getting to their own community as captives, they realized that Alamala, a smaller community, whom they did not consider as a serious threat, had already taken over Alagbede.

Moral of the story: Taking revenge shows a high level of wickedness while taking erroneous revenge is a higher level of wickedness and can be self-defeating either in the short or long term. Revenge is bad; erroneous revenge is evil.

In the next post, we shall consider the reasons people take erroneous revenge. You may drop likely reasons you know in the comment box.
