A group of people slaughtered a sheep at a popular open space known as 'Eparkini' in Cape Town, South Africa to “celebrate” former apartheid president FW de Klerk's death.

The party was organised by Black People’s National Crisis Committee.

"We are celebrating the death of de Klerk, the commander of Vlakplaas (death squad), the killer and the murderer of poor people and the last symbol of apartheid," said Mbulelo Dwane, one of the organisers of the event.

He said only black people were invited to the slaughtering of the sheep and that on the day of the former president’s funeral another event would be held.

"We are celebrating his death, we are very clear. His death to us is freedom,” he continued.

FW De Klerk, who was the last white president of South Africa between 1989 and 1994, died on Thursday after a long battle with cancer at the age of 85.

News of his death was met with mixed reaction from South Africans, with some praising him for fostering engagement between anti-apartheid leaders and members of the oppressive regime to negotiate, which saw SA transitioning to a democratic state and Nelson Mandela being released from prison.

Others remained highly critical of De Klerk saying he was no saint as he served in the National Party for many years before democracy and also refused to admit that apartheid was a crime against humanity.

Apartheid was a racist system that separated races in South Africa and oppressed the black majority.

Hours after his death the De Klerk Foundation released a video in which he apologized to black people for apartheid.
