More action needed to solve Nigeria’s employment crisis – Minister
Dr Chris Ngige
Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige

The Minister for Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has said more action is needed to solve the unemployment problem in Nigeria.

Ngige said this while inaugurating an upgraded electronic platform, called National Electronic Labour Exchange Centre, aimed at minimising the challenges facing job seekers.

He also inaugurated the Migrant Resource Center and Nigerian German Center for jobs, migration and reintegration in Lagos on Monday.

Ngige said, “We need to solve the problem of unemployment from the roots. Inasmuch as we know these are things we have been doing, we have not done enough and we need to do more.

“The money we use in fighting insurgency, and buying bullets, and aeroplanes, if we spend half, we can stem poverty, unemployment and violence from the roots.”

The minister added, “In Nigeria with our population, we have 90 per cent of the young population. For me, that is the greatest danger; it has already started showing symptoms and signs.

“There is violence, insecurity, banditry ravaging all of Africa; Nigeria now is getting its turn of the madness. For me as minister, while I thank the German government, ILO, and European Union, we need to do more.

“The Nigeria government is doing their own thing; we need more synergy, we need your funding to meet the people and stop them from even thinking of migration. Sometimes, they pose a menace, especially if they don’t have skills, but those who have skills, we need to regularise them and make them legal migrants and residents in your country.”

‘Nigeria will benefit from patient-centered pharmacy practice model’
The Consul General of Germany in Lagos, Dr Bernid van Munchow-Pohl, on his part, said, “Youth unemployment is high. I am happy to note that during the German-Nigeria negotiations, a total of approximately 100 million euros was committed by my government.”

He added, “Through the Returning to New Opportunity Program implemented, 5,200 Nigerians have found employment, 500 of which are returnees from Germany. Also, 1,700 Nigerians and about 400 of them who are returnees from Germany have benefitted from business startup support.

“These results would have never been achieved without the migrant resources centres in Abuja, Benin, Lagos and the Department of Wages and Employment.”

According to him, Germany is planning to advance its activities in Lagos next year with an addition of 2.9 million euros for extended regional outreach, neo-corporations for startups and the fashion industry.

What unemployment in Nigeria? Didn't Femi Adesina claim that Bihari has fulfilled his promises to Nigerians? What unemployment are they addressing again? Also, what insecurity? According to Lai Mohammed Nigeria is the safest place on earth. So, what violence is Ngige talking about? ... Useless set of people. Government if lies and propaganda.

Na so.

They know these things according to him, yet their policies are anti people. Yet corruption gets worse everyday.

All the funds that find their way into private pockets. The interest paid on these public loans in private pockets is one of the reasons for this rate of unemployment. The import - export dichotomy tied to some of these loans is responsible for the death of many local industries, resulting in unemployment. After all these years of Turn Around Maintenance (TAM) with its intended failures, Nigeria still export crude oil, and import the several finished products at an unsavoury exchange rate. The award of import license in crude oil business is extremely lucrative because of the magnitude of corruption involved. This also fuel unemployment, Mr Ngige

Useless failed country…

Fix electricity, make it available 24hrs just like other countries and fix exiting roads and watch how unemployment rate will reduce.

Nigeria's population is growing rapidly, and the government isn't doing quite enough to solve these challenges. However, Tech companies have shown they have what it takes to solve this unemployment gap. For instance, the POS points have greatly helped in employing a lot of Nigerian youths in various regions. The government (executive and legislature) ought to make laws that are favourable for businesses to operate in Nigeria. Also, it is pertinent that Nigeria must see itself as an emerging economy and not a developed nation. With this, not all policies must be accepted, especially those which are not favourable to the masses.
