A catchy brand name can mean the difference between success and failure in many industries. Whether you’re launching your own business or working on branding an established one, choosing the right name can be an incredibly difficult task to undertake alone. Thankfully, we’ve put together this guide to help you brainstorm catchy brand names that will turn heads and start conversations about your business (and you). Follow these 10 steps to come up with a company name that will make people remember yours.

When brainstorming

The best way to get out of a creative rut is to try different activities, including trying new spaces. Music can help too. If you’re still stuck after trying these tactics, consider asking for help from friends or hiring someone to assist with brainstorming. Finally, research your industry. This will not only give you new ideas, but it can also provide valuable insight into what direction your company should take.

Coming up with ideas

Are you ready to brainstorm? Then grab a piece of paper and start writing down everything that comes to mind. Write every brand name that springs to mind and don’t worry about making sense. (One of Apple’s early names was Freeside, which Steve Jobs revealed when giving his Stanford commencement speech in 2005.) As much as possible, don’t stop yourself from writing anything down. But make sure it is actually something people will say out loud! Think through words with multiple syllables or sounds, or those with spelling issues or associations with other brands. It can be difficult to create a word made up of three random letters—especially if it's an acronym, initialism or nonsense word—that is both easy for customers to say and remember. Nonsense words tend not to be memorable over time; besides, Google has a search function that allows users to search for a string of letters.

Narrow down your list

Before you start brainstorming, narrow down your list of ideas to just a few options. If you’re thinking of starting a small e-commerce store that sells baby clothes and accessories, don’t just think about baby brands. Think about anything and everything that has to do with babies: diapers, strollers, toys. Narrow it down even further by only considering names with two or three syllables—short names are easier to remember than long ones.

How you can get help from others

The key to getting help is to make it clear that you need assistance. People want to help if they see that you're putting in an effort, but if you just sit back and wait for things to happen, it's unlikely that people will step up. Instead, you should be proactive about reaching out for help.
