Direct Primaries: NASS Is Confused As Usual by Validated: 5:51am On Dec 03, 2021
The NASS passed the 2021 Electoral Bill after almost three years of reviewing and ended up inserting a senseless clause on Direct primaries. Sent bill to the President for assent, meanwhile they all missed the important point of seeking to understand the capacity of INEC in supervising direct primaries across all political parties across 8766 wards, 774 LGAs, over 1400 constituencies, 37 states and so and so forth. Perhaps they were beclouded by greed or personal sentiments. They forgot about cost of such exercise. Now they are inviting INEC chair to ask about cost and logistics. An Assembly of over 400 members, not one thought of the implication of such reckless insertion. It took the presidency to spot such recklessness to our lawmakers. What a shame! Yet they earn higher than stable demicracies.
What primaries are they talking about? The same one conducted in Lagos or the one in Anambra where results were purchased by higher bidders or godfathers?
Mr President should just return the bill to them, let political parties determine their nomination process. NIGERIA DOES NOT HAVE THE RESOURCES TO WASTE ON DIRECT PRIMARIES!
