This statement by the Apostle Paul, has often been misinterpreted as an evidence that the soul returns to God just after death. However, when we read the context around this verse, our understanding is open to what Paul truly meant and his other statements on the topic.

"Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. - 2 Timothy 4::8
