Update from SIGGY

Great woes hit the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) as four students of the institution die in the same semester over school's health care negligence.

The recent of the deaths is that of a 300 level student of the institution, identified as Charles who was reportedly was rushed to the health centre having complained of difficulty breathing and gasping for breath.

He was said to have been abandoned in one of the wards in the facility because he couldn’t provide his receipt for the payment of SUG (Students' Union Government) dues, a student told reported.

“He was sick and taken to the school's health centre where those who brought him were asked told to go and bring his SUG receipt first before he could be treated. This was a 300 level student but we lost him to cardiac arrest because they couldn’t provide the SUG receipt.

“Unfortunately, academic activities are still ongoing as if nothing happened,” the student said.

Another student who confirmed the situation said, "We just lost a Funaabite because the ambulance required the SUG permission to pick up an emergency case".

Charles died due to negligence on the part of the management of the school's health Centre, yet another student said.

He added that the deceased was the fourth student to die during the current semester.

“Four students in a semester and the school still seems not to be bothered about it. I’m still trying to even imagine why medical attention needs permission. He could have survived it but the school health centre needs permission,” he said

“An ambulance was called, not a drop, not a cabman, an ambulance. And you are saying you need SUG President's approval. For what exactly? You need approval to save a life? Now we’ve lost another promising Funaabite because of unnecessary protocol by the union leaders and health centre.

“Even though the school fees were increased, basic health care and transport system of the school have gone moribund and become inadequate.”

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the union, Olumayowa Adekunfe, said investigation had commenced into the death to know if Charles was abandoned or not.

Adekunfe also said students don’t need to present their SUG receipt to be treated at the health centre.

“We are aware of his death, we are meeting the management over the incident today. We are not yet cleared on the whole situation but the issue of getting SUG receipt, that’s not true. They can be attended to without providing their SUG receipt,” he said.
