Nigeria’s Anti-Corruption Fight Sees 11 High-profile Convictions Since 2005 by Shehuyinka: 2:33pm On Dec 09, 2021
NO fewer than 11 high profile Nigerians have been convicted of corruption since 2005.

The individuals range from former state governors to ex-bank managing directors.

Mustapha Balogun was a former inspector-general of police, who was convicted in 2005 for pocketing public money and taking bribes.

Balogun served six months in prison after making a plea bargain with the Abuja High Court. He was put on trial for corruption involving N5.7 billion.

Late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha was a former governor of Bayelsa State, who was sentenced to two years in prison after he was convicted of two charges in 2007.

Lucky Igbenedion was a former governor of Edo State, who was accused and convicted of embezzling $24 million in 2008.

He went down as the first Nigerian governor to be convicted of looting public funds, after the Nuhu Ribadu – led Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged him with 142 counts of corruption.

Igbenedion was fined N3.5 million after he pleaded guilty to one count of corruption. He was initially sentenced to six months in prison, but pled to pay as an alternative.

Former Governor of Delta State James Ibori was convicted of stealing $250 million by a London court in 2012 and was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Prior to his conviction in the United Kingdom, Ibori had been arrested by the EFCC. He was charged with stealing public money, abuse of office and money laundering, first in 2007 and later in 2010.

James Bala Ngilari was a former governor of Adamawa State, who was convicted in 2017 after the Yola High Court found him guilty of four charges out of a 19-count charge case brought against him by the EFCC.

Ngilari was sentenced to five years in prison after he was summarily convicted for awarding a contract for the procurement of 25 vehicles at a cost of N167 million ($548,891), without following due process.

He was later acquitted by an appeal court in Adamawa in July 2017.

Former Governor of Abia State Orji Uzor Kalu was convicted in 2019 by the Lagos High Court for N7.65 billion fraud.

He was sentenced to 12 years in prison for using his company, Slok Holdings, to defraud Abia State for eight years.

The Lagos High Court judgment would go on to be overturned by the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 2020 on the grounds of it was a wrong trial. He was subsequently released from prison.

Joshua Dariye was a former governor of Plateau State who was initially convicted in 2018 for money laundering and criminal breach of trust by the Abuja High Court and later on by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

From an initial 14 years in prison, Dariye’s sentence was dropped to 10 years imprisonment.

One thing I will not do is to waste my prayer on Nigeria. God has abandoned Nigeria as a nation for a very long time.

Hmm...is it Nnamdi Kanu kind of Prison or House arrest?.... Which one?...
Our problem is our constitution and us the citizens...
When a bank robber is caught, the kind of treatment they undergo is different from the type our polithiefcians undergo even when the later is caught with numerous amount of money to his name yet our law subjects them to different kind of treatments, most times some pampering is added...Tell me why won't I loot public fund if I find myself in position.
I have never heard where bank robbers stole 2billion Worth's of cash even if they had to rob 5banks at a go but when they're caught, they're subjected to face the law which is the right thing to do and the right punishment melted out because they are threat to lives and properties ... what about our polithiefcians?....a man that loots an entire ministry, office etc is such man not a threat to lives and properties?.... Since APC forgives sin once you become a member...why is such previledge made available to polithiefcians only,..... Yahoo boys needs such previledges, arm robbers needs it as well...
You cannot say you're fighting corruption but right in front of you money exchanges hands and you look the other way.
Let everyone be treated equally when it comes to the law, if not I don't see any need why a polithiefcian will steal money instead of keeping him in the same prison where convicted arm robbers are kept, they are kept in a mansion with security men to watch them while they live their normal day life.... until this is addressed, our polithiefcians will continue stealing, just imagine one senator that was sent to house arrest (prison) was also receiving his monthly pay...
Nigeria is just a play ground for our polithiefcians.

Many of them are back or will soon be back to the corridors of power.

Corruption in Nigeria is systemic, it will be difficult or impossible to eradicate. Reduction is not even an option, people are just naturally corrupt.

They just camouflage us on that, those once stepped on toes that was why they were sentence after they traisd their stepped back they were released. That's Nigeria for you. Nothing like high profile sentences in Nigeria it always be low or no profile sentences.

Only 11 since 2005? With the kind of corruption in apc and pdp we should have at least 11 in a year, not counting sitting govs and those immune to prosecution.

Well said. Southerners and Christians need to wake up. The core North (muslims)has stolen this country beyond redemption, yet no conviction.

Come on, remove Semator Orji Uzor Kalu from the list.

The conviction was squashed by Supreme Court and by records, Kalu has never been convicted ever.

With the way corruption has become a norm in our society today, that is a very poor conviction rate. That's an average of 1 conviction every 1.4yrs..
At this snail rate, don't expect too much.
