A former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba, on Thursday said Nigeria is suffering today as a result of misgovernance from the federal to local government level.

Speaking on Channels Television programme monitored by Daily Independent, Na’Abba, who announced that he has dumped the National Consultative Front (NCFront), the Third Force Coalition, said there is a lack of seriousness on the part of leaders on what to do in order to move the nation forward.

While decrying the insecurity challenge in the country which he said has prevented foreign investors from coming into the country, Na’Abba said those in position of authority have refused to accept the fact that they must change their ways in order to govern the country according to democratic tenets.

He said, “So many things are wrong with the country. But there is a clear way to help solve those problems. What is worse is that the perception of the international community is that, of course, there is no security in Nigeria and investors have been saying they want to come and invest but we have not been seeing anything.

“This is no doubt related to the way and manner that the country is being governed. There is a lack of seriousness. Those in power are still not ready to accept that they must mend their ways. We have lost it democratically because those responsible for the preservation of democracy have been running round it instead of operating according to democratic tenets.

“To the extent that the immunity of the political system has broken down. Unless we begin to take measures to reclaim this immunity, this country is going to continue to drift. We are definitely drifting. Nobody will shy away from it”.

Speaking further, Na’Abba said Nigeria is continually drifting to the precipice and urgent action must be taken to arrest the drift.

“We must not shy away from the fact that the country is drifting because we want to satisfy the ego of certain people. We must speak the truth and measures must be taken to arrest this drift. That must begin by the political authorities from top to bottom.
“My own take is that there has been so much misgovernance in the country. From the federal government to states and local government, there is a general form of misgovernance. There has been no governance and even the way we operate our political parties is not the way it should be. In order for us to be able to bring about order in the country, we must take very good care of our political parties.

“We must allow our political parties to grow. They grow by imposing order on the political parties. There must be internal democracy, no imposition by those in control of the party and there must be a situation where people are generally confident in our political parties. So, the first issue is to tackle the issue of politics. Political parties are levers to determine whether the polity is healthy or not.

“You will agree with me that since 1999, we have refused to allow our political parties to grow. Because of that our polity has not grown and the consequence is that our economy will not grow. Also we cannot grow socially because there is no social economic order. I believe that those in control of the political parties must put their house in order, they must accept that they are wrong. They must apologise to Nigerians and they must change their ways”, he said.
