Nutritional/Therapeutic Uses
The most common nutritional deficiency in the US is an iron deficiency; infants and children under two are at risk of a deficiency due to their rapid growth rate and because they have low iron reserves.

Also, teenage girls are at risk due to iron loss during menstruation and the large amounts of iron needed for growth. Deficiencies are also common during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.

Some of the symptoms of an iron deficiency include fatigue, anemia, rapid heartbeat, interrupted sleep and cracks in the corners of the mouth. You may also see fingernails become weak, brittle and white.

Many enzymes that contain iron are involved in energy production. Iron also helps us to maintain a strong immune system, although too much iron or too little iron can be harmful to our body.

Since iron supports our immune system, a deficiency can lead to susceptibility to infection, poor antibody production and a low white blood cell count.

Many studies have found that low iron can affect one's ability to learn. Low iron can decrease your tolerance for cold and cause you to have less endurance and a lack of well being. Studies have shown that children who were deficient in iron who took iron supplements significantly improved their ability to learn.

The final stage of an iron deficiency is anemia. Before this happens a deficiency affects iron-containing enzymes and immune functions. Anemia symptoms include small pale red blood cells, fatigue and lack of concentration.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) can lead to developmental problems in children and a condition known as pica may develop (a craving for ice, clay or soil).

Safety Considerations
People with ulcers, arthritis and hemochromatosis should avoid taking supplements. High amounts of iron in the body can cause free radical formation. Iron and Vitamin E should not be taken together.
