Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by adejoro76: 3:39am On Jun 13, 2011
Ogun now on financial life support, says Amosun

GOVERNOR Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State yesterday painted a gloomy picture of the financial status of the State and said  "Ogun State Government is broke."

Amosun who was in Abuja for the seventh National Assembly inauguration in company of former Governor of the State, Chief Segun Osoba added: "In fact, the State could not fund the last May wage bill on its own and had to resort to borrowing from the banks because the state's financial situation is precarious"

" What I met on ground, I can't explain it. The situation is very bad. In fact, we were not able to pay last month's salaries. We had to resort to bank loans to pay staff salaries. We are going to engage the services of competent independent financial experts to audit the state's finances, because we want to know what went wrong. We would not interfere with their investigations. They will also assist us to totally re-design and re-engineer the finances of the state.''

He continued: "Virtually all sectors of the economy in Ogun State needs to return to its past glory: education, health, agriculture, infrastructure, commerce, just everything is in comatose condition in the state.

"We are embarking on an intervention programme in these five cardinal areas. In the education sector, we are going to make education free- primary and secondary school. And not only that, we intend to provide qualitative education for the people.

Amosun said his government would transform all public hospitals from being mere consulting clinics to standard and efficient health care system.

"We will promote the development of the agricultural sector in such a way that it would nose-dive into major industrial revolution in the state and an avenue for wealth creation in the state."

He also said his administration would generate about 10,000 new jobs within the first 100 days in office to address the crisis of unemployment bedeviling the state.

Meanwhile, Osoba, has advised President Goodluck Jonathan to be guided by merit and fairness in the composition of his new cabinet.

Osoba hailed the emergence of Aminu Tambuwal as the new Speaker of the House of Representatives against the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) South - West candidate, pointing out that the development was a reflection of true democratic tenets.

"We stand for merit, PDP zoning is their headache and if they like, they can go on mourning their defeat, but we in ACN are interested in promoting the tenets of democracy in the country.

"Jonathan is a beneficiary of the principle of merit and democratic norms, so he should stand by his own words and actions and ensure that what he stood for should be allowed to spread to other arms of government," he said.

Well done OGD! Generations would remember you as the yeye leader who bought Ogun to its knees. Oloshi lasa-lasan

Amosun, you are borrowing to pay salaries now, yet bringing in more overheads and offering free education? What is the plan? We are not dunces o.

Even the UK is having to cut here and there to reduce deficit but you seem to wan to raise the deficit.

While you're resting on your oars, IMO state governor is meeting with Fashola to discuss partnership and you are attending yeye meetings in Abuja.

You better head down Lagos and discuss how you can jointly build roads to interlink Lagos to Ogun so that you can benefit from investments and attract the Lagos populace to buy and build homes in Ogun while providing good road network to facilitate easy commute from Lag to Ogun.

^^

It's somewhat obvious that majority of them don't have a sound blueprint on development!  They seem to be only interested in providing free goodies without knowing how to generate revenue or attract investors!

Amosun ought to know that for any business/organization to grow, it's revenue power ought to surpass it's cost of running, not the other way round. When a state is already overburdened with deficits, thanks to mismanagement of the acccursed ex-governor, the wise thing a subsequent governor ought to do on resuming office is to seek out for new ways to generate revenues, not offer services free of charge!

Amosun should be looking at selling assets that are being under utilized and if within his power, privatize certain fractions of his government.  He should also be looking for new means of attracting the interests of new investors to the state, like working in hand with the CBN to provide capital for would be investors!

Good points thus. But why are the banks that are already broke themselves and probably on a life support machine still borrowing the states money. Common sense would suffice that you get rid of some of the workers in other to pay the other stranded workers or better still you apprenhend the culprit or thief that stole the peoples money.

All Nigeria need to do to Daniel is ask for his extradition. If his brought back to Nigeria,  his houses, holdings and any other intrest world-wide should be confisticated and sold off,  I am sure after such an exercise the State's balance sheet would look good and healthy. We need to deal with issues firmly rather than going on an un-neccessary merry go round.

Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by Sunofgod(m): 6:14pm On Jun 13, 2011
All these 'Broke States'

I wonder what will be the first state to default on their loans?

That's the point where we will see total anarchy. The moment the state can no longer pay its workers.

And why would any 'Bank' loan money to a 'Broke state' with little or no prospects of revenue generation?

Like Rochas he better go see Fashola to find out how 'Bonds' work. Then like Fashola he can delay the downfall of his state for just a little longer until the bonds mature.

I fear for the future of Nigeria.
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by Xfactoria: 6:18pm On Jun 13, 2011
That is what they all say so that when they perform below expectation, they will be excused.

I don't know what the fuss about Ogun State financial situation is. OGD already said the State needed to raise bonds as lifeline even though we know he was going to embezzle part of the proceeds. It was a fact that the state needed to do something about its financial status.

Amosun should get down to work or be ready to be kicked out. We elected him to fix the state and and not to complain about obvious challenges!
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by delicious1(m): 6:25pm On Jun 13, 2011
Is there any state that isn't broke and or indebted?

Majority of the states can't generate their own internal revenues -they wait for the crumbs the Government throws their way. Pity. undecided
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by Genius100: 8:02pm On Jun 13, 2011
So you can't pay existing salaries, yet you will create 10,000 jobs in the first 100 days. It better be the private sector creating those jobs,
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by gbolah1(m): 8:37pm On Jun 13, 2011
Mr Governor,I heard that you said ogun state is broke n you are planning to generate 10,000 job withing ur ist 100days.
I will advice you to concentrate on how to audit the account of the state first and bring the lost glory of the state finance back before you start thinking of adding more problem to ur neck.
How will you make payment for the new 10,000 staff if you are already borrowing money to pay for the existing one.
Kindly think deep before you proceed on your plan. a word is enough for a wise man.
You av name to protect, learn from your predecessor,Dont just go on a project just because you promise people while campaigning, is better for things to be delayed than doing it hurriedly and regret it later
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by Afam4eva(m): 8:44pm On Jun 13, 2011
E be like say Rochas and Amosun dey read the same script. Rochas Okorocha declared free education, Amosun did the same. Rochas declared Imo state broke and Amosun followed suit.
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by emiye(m): 10:00pm On Jun 13, 2011
This other south western Governors should be very careful trying to "copy" Lagos state. They are no mates , the Governors need to develop "unique" development agenda, likewise followers in these states should lessen expectations at least in the first year of govt, that is the " angrybitter truth"
Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by oderemo(m): 10:29pm On Jun 13, 2011
@ violent, i hear you.
the point amosun need to be aware of are that asset must equal/surpass liabilities or else trouble in the house.
y borrow to pay wages/salaries, how long to audit the state acct, don't see any reason to appoint unnecessary
comm. post/p.a if state is broke.
cut down on useless and unnecessary payments to council of chiefs, obas, and advisers.
in fact whats the point of free education in a broke state?
the governor should hit the ground running and not moaning.

It is no news that all the States in Nigeria are broke and owing billions.Ogun is therefore no exception. What we should be concerned with is what our money was spent on.Lagos owing billions is justifiable but not Ogun,Imo and others.

Re: Ogun State Is Broke - Governor Amosun by otokx(m): 9:40am On Jun 14, 2011
I propose that broke states be merged with states that are financially stable; in this case Ogun should be merged with Lagos but all them Amosun and co should be sent packing. llikewise Imo can be merged down to Rivers and Rochas sent packing.

I don't know why people like you are not in elected positions. For goodness sake when you have won an election politics is over. You cast the agbada, broom and that funny cap and dorn a three piece suit. Leave politics for economics. People did not vote him to talk but to walk. What right thinking economist will be borrowing for recurrent expenditure for goodness sake. He should strike when the iron is hot and capitalise on his party's hot popularity making swift changes like is happening in Imo. The States' finances are in a mess for exactly this reason he is towing when half of your income goes to servicing debts.

Cut costs, cut, cut, cut. Half of those he's paying probably don't go to the offices they claim, a good proportion are certainly ghost workers. He should immediately call all workers under forty and redeploy them to critical sectors of development namely infrastructure provision. Let them take over all the failed road, drainage, power, water projects that have been mismanaged and abandoned and tail off all sundry public works contracts - another area of monumental waste. Like you said immediately privatize all government holdings in business ventures. And all this job creation noise he's making, if it is not private-sector investment led and infrastructure targeted then let him get set to take an IMF loan to pay them.

Haba if they sack you from work, you no go sack your houseboy and driver quick quick. You go still dey do big man. May be I misunderstand what being broke is.
