Sam Gosling, a Professor of Psychology at The University of Texas believes we all leave clues about ourselves in a space we live in through something he calls “identity claims”. He explains identity claims to be deliberate statements we make to others about who we are. The items in your home could be a statement about your culture, beliefs or values. In most cases this is majorly for the benefit of guests who come visiting. Identity claims help paint a picture of who the owner of the space is. It helps portray the values they hold, hence identity claims could be traits of an extrovert. That is because they most likely want to host guests to come spend sometime with them. Choosing a painting design for your room or house is pivotal in reflecting your identity.

Asides “identity claims” there are other items that make us as individuals feel or think about certain things. Most people have items in their spaces that hold memories of times, people or places that are important to them. That is because it gives them this nostalgic feeling. Unlike identity claims, these items are not for guests. They are for the owner of the space as they draw inspiration from it, find it interesting or hold sentimental ties to it.

There are three types of home owners:
1. The minimalist
These type of home owners are individuals who have the idea that they don’t have to acquire house hold items they don’t need. This belief also shapes the way they design and decorate their home. For example they believe the bedroom is for sleeping and shouldn’t be furnished with house hold items or decorations. Because that will defeat the main purpose of the bedroom which is for sleeping. The ideal minimalist may not have a TV in their bedroom because it might distract him/her from sleeping when in the bedroom.

2. The glamorous
These home owners go all out to make their homes as fabulous as possible. Some even go as far as re-creating movie sets from their favourite movie scenes. For it’s all about surround themselves with latest trends.

3. The creative
Creatives cold be bohemian in nature, having their own taste and perspective that others might not understand. In most cases artists are day dreamers this could make them have abstract ideas others may perceive to be weird.

Different home owners have their preferences when it comes to interior design, decorations and colour. It all has to do with psychology. The interesting part is that not all interior designers are familiar with this concept. Some interior decorators have taken it upon themselves to play the role of a therapist when selecting designs for their clients homes in order to make the best pick that they resonate with. Now that we have established different types of home occupants and their preferences, lets discuss room colours.
