Nigeria should stop this ridiculous nonsense. We really need to get our act together. Why on Earth are we enforcing religious laws in a supposedly secular country? The incongruity of the whole thing is that the 1999 constitution provides that Nigeria is a secular country and prohibits the governments in Nigeria from adopting any religion as state religion. But the same nonsensical constitution then goes ahead to make provision for Sharia courts. Even as a counter balance to Customary Courts in the south, this is still a problem because it is based on religion and once you do that you are introducing religion into the functions of the state. Furthermore the adoption of Sharia law by most Northern States is a direct violation of the Constitution because it amounts to the adoption of a state religion which is prohibited by the constitution. But in Nigeria, any body who even challenges this in court as being unconstitutional will have immediate cause to fear for his life. Such is the fanatical and extremist fear and intimidation with which Islamic law is wantonly propagated.

The State should stay away from all things to do with religion - all religions, Christian, Muslim, Traditional. et all. There should be nothing like the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission or its Muslim equivalent. They should be scrapped. Religion is a personal affair and should have nothing to do with the state. All religious holidays should be scrapped - perhaps in lieu of such, individuals should be permitted a given number of days annually in addition to their regular leave from work which they may use for personal celebrations related to such. The state should withdraw completely from anything to do with religion and recognize it as a strictly personal matter, period.
