There will be no Christmas break for workers in the City of uMhlathuze in KwaZulu-Natal (South Africa) if they don’t fix water and electricity problems for residents.

This was claimed by newly-elected mayor Xolani Ngwezi during his inaugural meeting this week.

Minutes after he was elected, Ngwezi said no official would go on Christmas holidays if communities had no water and lights.

“People in the City of uMhlathuze have been complaining about service delivery with water provision, power, grass cutting and potholes topping the list. Potholes must be patched in the next 120 days of my leadership. Traffic lights must be fixed. My question is why does it take more than four months to fix traffic lights? I do not expect the answer now, but it has to be done. Gravel roads should have tar in the next three years. There is no official who will go on Christmas holidays when we have service delivery defects,” he said.

Ngwezi also spoke about having a skills audit in the municipality.

“We have to do the skills audit and determine whether officials are qualified to occupy their positions,” said Ngwezi.

The City of uMhlathuze is situated 180 kilometres north-east of Durban and is the third biggest municipality in the Kwazulu-Natal province, with business districts of Richards Bay and eMpangeni amongst others.
