AK 47 is not a weapon for law enforcement; it's a weapon of war. Even if the police wants to use it, only Special teams should have access to it, not all personnel.

IN theory it is true.

IN practice, this is Nigeria...where even before Boko was a thing, many a group of armed criminals was armed with AK type weapons. We can't send in policemen armed with service pistols against that.

(Your argument makes a lot of sense, a lot of it, so I am not disputing it really, but the Nigerian situation makes sense senseless.)

It is the same reason why the American police is becoming highly militarized....since Americans have a right to arm themselves under their second amendment...police forces have to do likewise, or else...because your local American criminal is probably armed with an arsenal of weaponry.
