Osinbajo And The Convoluted Role Of A "Deputy" by TheRareGem1(f): 5:38pm On Dec 27, 2021 |
Prior to the emergence of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as running mate to General Muhammadu Buhari, the role of the Vice President was one that not many paid any attention. In fact, the role was so inconsequential that I couldn't find an article where a Nigerian Vice President was called upon to act or speak on any national matter. Then came Osinbajo, a professor of law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014 and all of a sudden the expectation for the Office of the Vice President changed. Many citizens rewrote the constitution to suit their ignorance and even elevated fiction to become a school of thought. Things that were almost unthinkable became the norm. Even worse, was social media with its charlatans who pass themselves off as influencers. For most part, they influence empty rhetoric which are trumpeted by their followers. Back to the role of the Vice President, many will recall that Kamala Harris was a fixture in the run up to the 2020 election in the US. Almost every news item had one thing or another to say about the first Black woman or south Asian woman to be the Vice Presidential candidate of a major political party in the US. But since the election has come and gone, very little is heard of Kamala and this is down to the fact that the Office of the Vice President is not as recognised as many think. The Vice President are there to carry out assignments given to them by the President. It is sheer ignorance and near stupidity to equate the VP to the President. The President has the final say. The VP can only advise him on issues but lacks the constitutional powers to execute them. As for Osinbajo, he is lucky than most, he had the opportunity to be Acting President in Nigeria. It was a good time to be alive in Nigeria. The dollar which was at over N500 crashed to over N300 in weeks, he sacked 10 FAAN directors during an unannounced visit to the Lagos airport. He saved thousands from food starvation in the Northeast, he went against the "cabal" by appointing Walter Onnoghen as CJN. In between, he sacked Lawal Daura as DSS DG for blocking the gate to the National Assembly. He signed Executive Orders to ensure that Ease of Doing Business became priority and Nigeria went up that ranking in no time. The role of a deputy, be it vice president, deputy governor, deputy general manger, assistant manager, assistant pastor, etc does not really change. How many people have seen the assistant to the general overseer of a church preach at a major crusade? Or has Sheikh Gumi allowed his deputy to share the limelight with him? We must always realise that the role does not change. A deputy is a deputy. I will leave with this example for football fans. Michael Carrick was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coaching crew. In fact, he was assistant to the Norwegian manager. When Solskjaer was sacked, Carrick showed that he was his own man. He dropped Manchester United legend, Cristiano Ronaldo, for the game against Chelsea, this is an action some fans believed Solskjaer was incapable of doing. My point is that Buhari is not Osinbajo and Osinbajo is not Buhari. One is the President and the other Vice President. The actions of the President in certain quarters cannot be deemed to be the actions of the Vice President. For those in doubt, look up the Nigerian constitution for the functions of the Vice President. http:///s108fbce8211227en_ng?link=1&client=news

The truth is most Nigerians don't know the constitutional roles of an office. Secondly, they don't know how things work at all generally. |
