Following the death of her father, King George VI, on February 6, 1952, Elizabeth II's coronation took place at Westminster Abbey on June 2, 1953, when she was just 25 years old. Over the next seven decades, with husband, Prince Philip, at her side, the Queen served through the 20th century, the start of a new Millennium and into the 21st century, witnessing new technological advances and a succession of British governments of different political persuasions. In mourning: In the earliest image from February 7, 1952, the Queen is pictured in a black outfit as she returns to Clarence House in London. At this point, she had been monarch for just one day after the death of her father King George VI when she was 25 years old.

Royal wave: Before Elizabeth became Queen she was already married to Philip. They tied the knot when she was 21, and he was 26. At the races: It's no secret the Queen is a fan of the horse races. She began riding lessons at the age of three and is well known for her knowledge of thoroughbreds and breeding. Walking the corgis: The Queen is also known for her love of corgis – and has owned at least 30 Pembroke Welsh corgis, all of whom have descended from her dog Susan, who was given to the Queen on her 18th birthday.
