The word around the (online) street today has been that Apple had started recalling Verizon iPad 2 models that shipped from China to the US. Luckily right as the rumor mill started flowing though, Apple sent a brief note to All Things Digital confirming a very small recall on these iPads.ipad 2 accessory ipad2 leather case ipad 2 leather cases




Describing it as a “extremely small” number of Verizon iPad 2′s being recalled, the problem had to do with the device identifiers, or MEIDs. These play a part in setting up the new devices for data activation / usage.

The problem with the same MEID on different iPads, it would be impossible for the users to activate the iPad if it was already registered on the network.

Duplicate MEID numbers were flashed onto an extremely small number of iPad 2 units for the Verizon 3G network,” an Apple representative said on Friday.

Although most of the small number of devices involved were still in the process of hitting the market, a few had already found their way into customers’ hands.

Some of the affected customers have reported receiving credits and free accessories as compensation for the delay, but there’s no official statement from Apple on this. There’s also no word on what Apple will do for the customers who already got iPad 2′s with the wrong MEID, or what they’ll be offered.
