The Mathematician That Invented Algorithm And Algebra by Aljebraschool(op): 2:36am On Jan 12, 2022
Mathematics is the oldest field of knowledge after philosophy, and it has been regarded as the language of science. But Mathematics was initially treated as an abstraction during the Greek's civilization. This notion changed during the Golden Age when the Arabians were implementing science with new philosophy which brought a concept of applied science that we have today.
This series answers the question: who is the father of algorithm? and who is the father of algebra?
Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī (Arabic: محمد بن موسى الخوارزمي) was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, astrologer and geographer. He was born around 780, in either Khwarizm or Baghdad, and died around 850.

He was the author of al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-jabr wa-l-muqābala, the first book on the systematic solution of linear and quadratic equations. Consequently, he is considered to be the father of algebra, a title he shares with Diophantus. The word algebra is derived from al-jabr, one of the two operations used to solve quadratic equations, as described in his book. Algoritmi de numero Indorum, the Latin translation of his other major work on the Indian numerals, introduced the positional number system and the number zero to the Western world in the 12th century. The words algorism and algorithm stem from Algoritmi, the Latinization of his name. His name is also the origin of the Spanish word guarismo, meaning digit.

I love algebra though... Mathematics is sweet when you understand it..

Re: The Mathematician That Invented Algorithm And Algebra by WoundedLamb:
Nice one, OP. But I do not really completely agree with the writer.

Nobody invented algorithm. Algorithm is not a formula or a principle or a law or anything like that. It's just a series of step required to solve just about any problem. The steps depend on the problem being solved. And humans have always solved thier problems in steps (in fact, we as individuals create and use algorithms everyday e.g. cooking steps). So the concept of algorithm has always been there since the ancient past (before the middle ages) and it's practically impossible to say who started it. Computer science/Mathematics only formalized it by penning down some known steps to solve basic mathematicsal problems like division, etc. so that they can easily be reused.

Yes, the name is derived from the name of the mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi primarily cause of his contributions to the numeral system in his manuscript informally known as 'Thus spake Al-Khwarizmi' ('Al-Khwarizmi' would later become 'Algorizmi' in the Latin translation) which he wrote before The Algebra. But he did not really "invent" algorithm, he merely presented his solutions in steps. In fact, Alan Turing's Turing machines of 1936 did more in terms of formalizing what we know as algorithm today.

So while it might be correct to attribute the term to him or even call him the father of algorithm, I don't think the word "invent" is adequate in this context.
