As salaamu alaikum, fellow muslim brothers and sisters, there are some people who says it is not good to pray for the dead, even to your parents if after they died, their bone of contention is this Ayah of th Quran in Suratu Najm. Quran 53 Vers. 39 { Wa An Laisa Lil Insaani Ilaa Ma Saha} "And that there is not for man except that [good OR bad] which he does" I tried ponting out this Hadeeth to them but fell to their non listening eyes,
Narrated by Abu Hurairah [R.T.A] Allah's Messenger {S.A.W} said 'When a person is dead, his deeds cease(are stopped) except from three things'
*Deeds of contionous Sadaqah {act of charity}: e.g. an orphanage home, or a well for giving water to drink, and many more like that
* A written knowledge with which mankind gets benefits
*A righteous, pious child who begs Allah to forgive his/ her parents
Fellow muslims, pleas what else will I tell these people

^^^^^^^^^^^^ wa aleykumu salaamu wa rahmatUllah.

it may be best that you ask them if they know any hadith that forbids praying for a deceased muslim, while you have presented to them at least the hadith above to clearly support your argument.

the other question should be if they accept that the statement of Muhammad [as] is te highest among mankind. if they disagree, you should ask them to give who is higher than him and why. if they agree that his statement is the highest, ask them why they are rejecting the hadith you presented.

if Muhammad [as] is the only one Quran is revealed to, it s obvious that Allah allowed him to explain what needed to be explain so that the heart accepts now that his explanation brings full understanding that is enough to completely guide as Allah Wills.

a person who rejects such a hadith must have a reason or lacks knowledge. if the former is the case and the reason is unfounded, a sincere believer will accept a clear evidence. if the later is the case, when knowledge that does not disagree with Quran but complements it is provided, the sincere believer takes it in.

our affair is made easy and completed, already while the messenger [as] was with his companions [ra].

Assalamualaikum bro,

There is a Hadith were the Prophet(saw) urges other to pray for the Dead persons forgiveness.

Usman ibn 'Affan(ra) relates that when the Prophet(saw) used to finish
burying someone, he(saw) would stand by the grave and say,
"All of you, ask Allah to forgive your brother and make him steadfast, for he is now being asked."

Assalamualaikum bro,

Bismilllahir-rehmanir-raheem.

In the Tafseer by ibn Kathir its mentioned that the above verse refers to the obligatory deeds like Salah, etc. But the reward of voluntary deeds like Sadaqa etc can be offered to others. There is a hadith that mentions that the Prophet (saw) allowed the son of a dead parent to do Hajj for her. Here is the extract of the Tafseer of the Verse you mentioned.

In the foregoing section we have explained that verse [39] means that no person can perform an obligatory act, such as faith, prayers and fasts,
on behalf of some other person to free him of his religious duties. He will be able to benefit only from the good he himself has done. This, however,
does not imply that a person cannot perform supererogatory acts and proffer their reward to someone else. There is ample textual evidence of
ShAri'ah that a person can supplicate or give charity or do any other good deed and proffer its reward to others. Further, there is an overwhelming
consensus of the Ummah on this issue.
