Fashola Frowns At Road Closure For Top Govt Officials by dapachez: 11:08pm On Jun 19, 2011

[left] Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Ragi Fashola has frowned against the idea of road closure for top public officers in town, just as he posited that such behaviour must be eradicated quickly from the country's national life. Addressing news men at the presidential Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, Fashola referred to the act as uncaring and insensitive, adding that the people through those roads. According to him; "the people on whose behalf we exercise office go through those roads and I think it is extremely insensitive to shut down the road because one public officer is in town, these are the kind of behavior that I think we must get rid of very quickly from our national life. You know some of the few things that I see just locked down the road because one big official is coming to town. It is absolutely uncaring and insensitive".
Fashola urged all levels of governance to shed there egos and put on the egos of the citizens by putting there interest first, share their pains and their discomfort. "I think this is the time really that at all levels of governance we must shed our egos, we must put the egos of the citizens, the people we serve at the four front of all of the consideration and you know if we do this if we humble ourselves before the people we will all be better for it", he posited. He said one could not re-emphasized the need for collaboration in different levels of government with different responsibilities set out in the constitution in places where clearly common sense and the necessity and interest of the people dictates that all arms of government must work together. His words; "It is very clear to anybody who understands the workings of government that no arm of government can function entirely on its own and even within the same arm the ministries, departments are all inter-dependent and inter-related in one another so it is a continuous exchange of relationships, compromise far sightedness, focus on what the real picture is and what the citizens expect of us.
The Lagos boss who paid an unscheduled visit to the Murtala Muhammed Airport road along the Agege/Oshodi link road from the airport has put an end to traffic congestion caused by motorists that park vehicles along the road. Fashola in company of senior Nigeria Army and Police officers explained that it was wrong for anybody to take laws into his hands by parking their cars to cause obstruction on the road. He warned car dealers who according to him have also worsened the traffic by converting the already narrow road to an exhibition ground for the sale of their vehicles to vacate the place with immediate effect. The governor in an interview with newsmen at the airport urged the military personnel to do all they could to ensure that traffic along the Airport Road is maintained to avoid congestion. He therefore urged the dealers to remove the cars obstructing traffic along the road within 24 hours, saying that failure to do so will force the state government to enforce full weight of the law, as the state task force will tow the cars away, adding that the general security of the state will improve for the benefit of Lagosians.

Very typical Fashole. Even in heavy traffic, the man sits jejely and read his books.

Fashola bans use of siren by visiting governors

The governor said the use of siren by those in authority was a way of terrorising the taxpayers whom they are supposed to serve, adding that as the governor of the state, he had consistently refused to use siren.

Fashola, who disclosed this in Lagos, said that the measure became imperative as the use of siren by these categories of persons has continued to constitute an unacceptable slur on the state’s traffic management system.

He said that he has successfully demonstrated that there is the need to exhibit patience in negotiating the traffic of Lagos rather than the use of siren.

The governor pointed out that it was time to stop using tax payers’ money to purchase siren from foreign countries, adding that such funds could be used to better the lot of the citizenry.

He said, “The use of siren has constituted an unacceptable slur on our traffic management system. I have successfully demonstrated that you need patience and not the siren to negotiate through the traffic in Lagos. I seek the cooperation of all and sundry to demonstrate its benefit, including visiting governors and other public officers.

“Let us all get rid of these nuisance on which we spend millions of our hard earned money to keep the producers in Europe and America in business while we use it to terrorise the taxpayers who we serve.”

He has said the truth. There is no justification to the use of siren around us.

He is such a noble creature. Remove the yoke called Tinubu from his neck and he would transform Lagos to London in the next four years.

ROMFLAO

Really, i was in Abuja couple of weeks back and i saw several govs convoy speed past other cars with a loud horn for people to stee clear of the road. However the same day i saw Fasholas convoy drive past me in traffic and he was reading while his convoy was holed up in traffic.

Sirens should only be for Ambulance, police and fire service. Mr president could have a motorcade of 100 cars but please no sirens. I do understand for security reasons outriders are neccessary to clear the traffic for a presidents convoy though.

Fashola's truly a people-minded governor.

He's gradually being bred up to be President 2015. Isn't anybody seeing that or are we waiting for 2014 before he declares ambition?

I feel Fashola's pain.

Friday 10 June in Lagos, the roads were closed all the way from Victoria Island till MMA (yes!), to enable a thoroughfare for Dame Patience Jonathan to get to the airport. I was taking someone to the airport and only escaped being trapped in traffic by the whiskers, cos I was just a few cars ahead of the advance car.
Re: Fashola Frowns At Road Closure For Top Govt Officials by tollu: 9:03am On Jun 20, 2011
Sometime last week as well, the IG reportedly came into Lagos and one could just see policemen lining the highways in large numbers and the anthony link road from Maryland to Oshodi expressway was cordoned off. How long that lasted I can't say.

Sirens for government officials I can even understand. What about some fat cats, male and female, that for whatever reason have police escorts and still blast sirens? That's just the height.

Say "no" to PDP, say "no" to zoning, say "no" to imposition of candidates, say "no" to tribal/religious inclination
I will be voting a "Presidential aspirant" Fashola, anytime!

They federal people need to stop using the siren as the able Governor said.

The federal government is stubborn like Obasanjo. The federal government is leaving her responsibility of working with the Lagos State government

to provide more roads for the Lagosians, because at least 10% of Nigeria population are living in Lagos.

Really Fashola might not be a perfect governor (at least nobody is perfect) but for sure the man is a good. We need more people like him on our corridor of power.
Re: Fashola Frowns At Road Closure For Top Govt Officials by OmoTier1(m): 1:19pm On Jun 20, 2011
ALL of the ACN governors use sirens! That is a well known fact.

A while back,in Edo state, Oshiomhole was seen caught in traffic on the popular airport road, when He was going to inspect some projects. He quitely came down from his car, walked and asked his aides to help the traffic warden (who was overwhelmed)to clear the traffic while he went on to inspect the road near by. People came out and were thanking him. This was a complete turn around from what people in the state experienced few years back under a tyrannical government of lucky Igbinedion.

As far as I am concern, the FG is a disgrace to good governance and wellbeing of Nigerians. Oh have we forgotten so soon how the jammed all networks 'cos someone was taking quake a oath of office?

Na wa for una o!

Make una come Bayelsa State, where even Sapem Oil Servicing Company, Daewoo C & C, Setraco Construction Company PLC, Commissioners and in some cases LGA Chairmen dey blow siren lyk sai their lyf depend on am. One single Policeman (Driva) alone go dey insyd Patrol Van dey blow siren with heavy speed lyk say oda people no suppose use the same roads wit am. Its often times very pathetic and seriously annoying. Me, I stubborn well well and anytym I hia siren, look mirror, come see say na 1 person dey the car dey blow the siren, I go block am til I reach my junction.
