The most expensive coach transfer in the world as of 2020 comprises managers who were lured from their club to another after paying a huge or small amount of money. Furthermore, the money paid by a club to another club in order to hire their coach is called Compensation.

In addition, the two teams will agree on a compensation fee before any transfer will proceed. In the case that the manager’s contract expires the summer he is in need, he can leave for the other club without any compensation fee.

After his success at Hoffenheim in his second season, he was signed by RB Leipzig on a four-year contract deal. The German club paid a sum of 5 million euros to their rivals in order to make Nagelsmann their new manager ahead of the 2019/20 campaign. Furthermore, this is the tenth most expensive coach transfer.

9. Peter Bosz, 2017 (Ajax Amsterdam – Borussia Dortmund) – £4.3 million (€5 million).


Peter Bosz’s transfer from Ajax to Dortmund is the record buy-out of a coach for a German club. In addition, Dortmund paid five million euros to Ajax as a compensation fee to buy out the Dutch manager’s remaining contract. However, he was later sacked for not progressing in the UEFA Champions League, but the transfer is still the ninth most expensive coach transfer in the history of football.

8. Maurizio Sarri, 2019 (Chelsea – Juventus) – 5 million pounds (€5.55 million).


Mauricio Sarri helped Chelsea to win their second UEFA Europa League title in his first and only season as their manager. Eventually, he was approached by Italian giants Juventus to come and manage them ahead of the 2019/20 season. Due to his remaining contract with the Blues, the Old Lady paid a sum of five million pounds as compensation fee and to buy out the remaining of the Italian boss’ contract. Currently, Sarri has no job after he was sacked by Juventus after the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

7. Ronald Koeman, 2015 (Southampton – Everton) – £5 million (€6 million).


Ronald Koeman’s success rate at Southampton is what attracted the Toffees to him. After helping Southampton qualify for the Europa League, finishing sixth in the league table which was the Saints highest-ever finish. Furthermore, the toffees paid a sum of five million pounds as compensation fees to Southampton in order to appoint the Dutch manager as their new coach. Along with this, he is currently the head coach of Barcelona.

6. Brendan Rodgers, 2012 (Swansea City – Liverpool) – 5 million pounds (€6.2 million).


Liverpool signed Brendan Rodgers after a successful stint with Swansea City. Before he accepted to become the head coach of the Reds, he signed a contract extension with Swansea. Nevertheless, the Reds paid a compensation fee of five million pounds to Swansea in order to buy out his recently signed contract with them. Finally, this transfer is the sixth most expensive coach transfer in football’s history.
