Toy gun robbery suspects set ablaze in Anambra

Armed robbery suspects allegedly operating with toy guns have been set ablaze in Awada, near Onitsha, Anambra State by an angry mob.
Information revealed that the suspects at about 5.30pm on Wednesday operated on a motorcycle in the area and robbed some persons in their shops.

A source said during a chase by an angry mob when they discovered the robbers were using toy gun accosted them at Oraifite street by Ogbo bread and set them ablaze with their motorcycles.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.

He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Echeng Echeng had urged the people of the state to exercise restrain and handover suspect to the police for proper investigation instead of resorting to self help.

The PPRO said, "The Commissioner of Police Anambra State Police Command Echeng Echeng today 20/1/22 urge the members of the public who resort to jungle justice to exercise restraint and hand over suspects to police for proper investigation.

" He made the plea, following the mob action that took place at Awada environs on 19/1/2022.

"Information revealed that at about 5:30pm on on 19/1/2022, the yet unidentified armed suspects, operating with motorcycle, robbed some persons in their shops at Awada. During a hot chase by an angry mob when they discovered the robbers were using toy gun, accosted the suspects at Oraifite street by Ogbo bread and set them ablaze with their motorcycles.

"Consequently, the CP who frown at such act thanked the members of the public for assisting the Police in apprehending suspected criminals also urged them to always exercise restraint by not taking the law into their hands.

"They should endeavour to take such suspects to the nearest police station whenever they are apprehended. This would afford the Police the opportunity to conduct appropriate investigation into the nefarious activities of the suspects; and bring them to justice in accordance with extant laws.

"To this end, residents of the state are enjoined to remain law-abiding and vigilant. In the event of distress call or dissemination of useful information, call the *Command Control room numbers: 07039194332 or 08039334002 and Emergency No: 112" ,the PPRO stated.
