Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease that commonly happens after puberty to certain people. The acne blocks the pores and accumulates the production of sebum, bacteria, and dead skin cells. The blockages result in the production of whiteheads, blackhead nodules, and pimples. The physiological cause of acne is due to abnormal follicular keratinization and the growth of Propionibacterium acnes underneath the skin. This bacteria can proliferate the skin cells and grow in numbers if left untreated. There are several factors that cause acne such as:

● Environmental factors
● Genetics
● Stress
● Medications
● Genetics
● Choosing the wrong skincare products
● Diet
● Others

Besides that, acne vulgaris is a phenomenon of skin condition that happens to many people and may cause emotional distress and depression. However, acne treatment can be quite challenging. The treatment for acne may take months to recover depending on how severe the condition is. However, with treatments using medications and lifestyle changes, acne can be treated and restored to normal conditions. Below are the lists of how you can encounter acne problems.

1) Wash your face

Pay attention to how you wash your face. The initial step towards healthy skin is how you practice washing your face correctly. Avoid washing your face in a harsh manner. Washing excessively can strip the natural oil and hence cause the skin to produce more sebum to rebalance the oil lost. Make sure you use a gentle cleanser and massage your face in circular motions to ensure the blood flows to all parts of the skin. This method is important to oxygenate your skin cell. The purpose of cleansing is to remove excess oil, sweat, dirt, and impurities but many people are unaware washing the face regularly can make acne worse. Therefore, learn the massage technique especially if you have acne-prone skin.

2) Choose skincare wisely

Choosing skin care is part of an important task. Make sure you know your skin type before deciding to buy skincare whether you have dry, sensitive, combination, or oily skin. People who have acne generally have oily skin due to over-productions of sebum. You are advised to incorporate products such as serum that contain a low concentration of salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, or mandelic acid in your skincare if you have oily type skin or acne.

These ingredients can help you to prevent mild acne and reduce breakouts. Avoid skincare-containing oil because it can clog pores in fact you are advised to choose a product, for example, a moisturizer with a light texture such as gel-based rather than a heavy texture like creamy based. Make sure the moisturizer has high water absorbing capacity such as hyaluronic acid to lock the moisture into the skin. Water is very important to restore skin oil balance while dehydration may propagate more acne production.

3) Avoid heavy makeup

If you are a makeup junkie, now it’s time to limit the use of makeup. Makeup can make clog pores and trigger more breakouts. Besides that, make sure you properly prep your skin with makeup based such as wearing moisturizer, sunscreen, and primer before you put on any makeup. Always wash your face thoroughly to remove the makeup. Use gentle makeup remover or wipes with safe ingredients and practice a double cleansing method to ensure your face is well cleansed. Be sure to take off the makeup before you sleep no matter how sleepy you are. Never go to bed with makeup on your face.

4) Cleanliness

The failure of practicing clean habits can eventually lead to skin problems including acne. Makeup brushes and facial sponges should be cleaned regularly with soap and water to prevent the growth of bacteria that may cause more breakouts. Avoid touching your face to avoid horizontal contamination. Wash your hands frequently so if you accidentally touch your face at least your hand is clean and reduces the risk of bacteria transmission to the skin.

5) Acne treatment

Topical treatments using over-the-counter medications such as acne cream or gel may help to reduce further acne and breakouts such as benzoyl peroxide to treat common mild acne or clindamycin to treat acne vulgaris. These medications are non-prescribe and can be found at local pharmacies. However, it is quite drying and may irritate the skin at the beginning of use. Another option is a low concentration of retinoid gel works to prevent the formation of active acne. Use these medications with caution if you have sensitive skin. If all these methods don't work for you, your final option is to consider antibiotics such as minocycline and doxycycline to treat moderate to severe acne with a prescription and monitor from health care professionals.
