Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a lot of things to a lot of people. Some of his admirers have called him the Father of modern Lagos and some have regarded him as the nightmare of the present leading opposition party in the country, PDP. He has also enjoyed a number of slanderous names by opponents but one thing is for sure, he is someone who has mastered the game of politics. Whether you choose to refer to him as ASIWAJU or JAGABAN, majority of the populace know who you’re referring to. He is arguably the most popular politician from the south western region of the country right and among the most popular persons in the country today. Asiwaju understands politics and he knows it well which is why it is funny when certain articles try to discredit his personae by referring to him as less influential like the one written by Mebele Okugbo.
The author claimed that Tinubu was not instrumental in the election of President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, which is a laughable statement in its entirety for several reasons. One of the reason being that President Buhari had contested 3 times and failed to clinch power till the merger majorly between Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria and Buhari’s Congress for Progressive Change and part of the All Nigeria Peoples Party back in 2013. Buhari relied on the expertise of Tinubu who introduced his former cabinet member as the Vice-Presidential candidate which gave the party victory in 2015. How was his involvement not instrumental?
He also claimed that Tinubu is a result of media hype. There is a simple answer to that, Asiwaju left office of the Governor of Lagos State in 2007 right? Show me any of his peers who served between 1999 and 2007 that can either lay claim to as much influence as him politically today or list the amount of leaders that have been mentored or given an opportunity to serve as Asiwaju has done to so many leaders today including Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.
On the issue of Edo state election, Obaseki ran a smooth campaign using previous videos where former governor, Adams Oshiomhole had made certain comments about Pastor Ize-Iyamu who used to be in the PDP. It was a miscalculation but a fair one. If both Obaseki and Ize-Iyamu knew they would switch paties, things would have happened differently but that is the game of politics, no permanent friends or enemy, it’s a matter of interest. The election was in no way an indication that Asiwaju is less influential
Tinubu is not the only one who has shown interest in presidency but somehow he is the most talked about among the people eyeing the seat, it only tells you one thing, even his haters are admirers who are too engrossed in their hatred to admit it.
Asiwaju has a date with destiny in 2023.
