The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has recalled how he earned N620 in 1981 as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Lagos.

Osinbajo disclosed this at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Association of Nigerian Law Teachers on Tuesday in Kano.

H said although the money was more than enough for him at the time, it clearly shows how life speedily changed for Nigerians.

He said, “I started teaching at the University of Lagos in 1981, as lecturer II, my salary at that time was N620, this clearly shows that the place of law teachers is crucial and important to the lives of the nation”.

“We, law teachers are custodians and creators of the underline concepts and fundamental premises of legal framework.

“And because we are the thinkers for the system of law and justice and our profession.

Our conference has always been a forum for the free and yet deep interrogation of fundamental ideas and principles that hold society together.

“Questions like the trajectory of law, law and order, democratic practice and their current interpretations and current efficacy should be asked”.

He said the theme of this year’s conference, “Law, democracy and electoral processes” is appropriate as the national elections were coming in less than a year.

Osinbajo further said that democracy was under severe attack in Africa.

“Since 2017, there had been 12 military coups in Africa,”.

He, however, explained that Nigeria has a strong civil society that would continue to safeguard the nation’s democracy.

“In keeping with our foreign policy

“Democracy has become part of our exceptionalism, our gallant armed forces are totally subordinated to civilian command and authority.

“And fully committed to defending our constitutional order against internal and external threats,” he said.

That was when Nigeria was really working!

Naira was 2.02 naira against the US dollar then. If we are to calculate that right now that should be 620/2.02 which is approximately 307 US dollar. Going by CBN's exchange rate of 417 naira per dollar now, that's about 128k which is still close to the monthly salaries of most level 08 workers of today. I think that 620 naira should be able to sustain him and his family for a month then.

N620 in 1981. It a pure lie.

The economy was good at that time. One could easily buy a brand new car. A brand new peugeot 504 was less than N10,000 then. VW beetle was even cheaper. How many lecturer can buy a brand new car now? All we see are tokunbo vehicles. As a civil servant then, life was beautiful. People need to wise up. Those greedy politicians and their supporters are only after political office to steal. Many supporters of bad government, usually use the money to send their families and kids abroad, leaving behind miscreants to still be supporting backwardness. History really needs to be effective taught in schools, to me it seems like a deliberate attempt to programme the masses to their own selfish desires.
