Firm Or Soft Mattress: Which Is Right For You,Find Out! by Y4all: 1:44pm On Feb 16, 2022
Let’s face it, a restful night's sleep cannot be possible without a comfortable sleep surface. The reality is, shopping for a comfortable sleep surface can be a very tiresome task especially if faced with the problem of choosing between a firm and a soft mattress. It could be a very tricky decision especially if one is not armed with the requisite information. More so, the variety of mattresses available in the market today coming in their different types, shapes, and sizes have even made it even more overwhelming. Shoppers are always trapped in the rubble and faced with the dilemma of making the right decision.
In most cases, buying a mattress is a big investment and making the right decision is something buyers cannot afford to jeopardize. Therefore, this is a great place to start because the mattress firmness or otherwise goes a long way to affect how comfortable or supported you feel on a mattress. Yes, a big part of it comes down to personal preference, but in this guide, we have laid bare who should use what especially taking into cognizance indices such as sleep positions, bodyweight, etc.

Who Should Choose a Firm Mattress?
Stomach sleepers: Firm mattresses are very suitable for stomach sleepers. This mattress offers them enough support across their entire body.
Suitable for Back sleepers: Back sleepers function well on a Firm mattress. A firm mattress keeps their lower back from collapsing, which could allow for more oxygen intake while sleeping.
Heavier people: Heavier people or plus-sized people especially people weighing above 90kg or 200 pounds require more support than a soft mattress can offer. Firmer mattresses have enough pushback to prevent excess sinking and the sensation of being stuck in the mattress.
Hot sleepers: A Firm mattress allows more air to flow across the surface of the bed, so you are less likely to wake due to night sweats.
People suffering from certain health challenges: Anyone who experiences health problems such as diabetes or cardiovascular diseases might find a firmer mattress is the best option. A firmer surface will keep the body lifted, rather than sunk, allowing for more blood flow and healing.

Drawbacks of a Firm Mattress
While firm mattresses can be great, they’re not for everyone and can cause pressure points and discomfort. On a superficial level, the transition from a softer to harder mattress can initially feel very uncomfortable. This usually becomes less noticeable with time, it can take roughly 30 days for your body to adjust to a new sleeping surface. However, once you adapt to your firm mattress, you can enjoy its benefits. Firm mattresses may aggravate arthritis, joint, or scoliosis pain. Individuals with these conditions need a mattress to contour to their curves better and relieve pressure.

Who Should Choose a Soft Mattress?
Side sleepers: Softer mattresses are generally better for those who sleep on their side, as they better cushion the shoulders and hips. On the side, a softer mattress better aligns the spine, too.
People with Pain Issues: Those with arthritis and joint pain tend to find relief with a softer mattress that cushions sensitive areas.
Those who like to sink into their mattress. Soft mattresses really allow sleepers to sink into the mattress. Anyone who prefers to sleep “in” their mattress should prefer a soft mattress.
Suitable for lightweight sleepers: lighter individuals (those 130 pounds i.e. 58kg or less), will naturally experience very little sinking. Lightweight sleepers need a soft bed that will quickly respond to their body weight for adequate contouring.
Couples. Softer mattresses handle motion transfer better than firm mattresses. When one partner moves around on the mattress, they have less of a chance of disturbing the other partner on a soft mattress.

Drawbacks of a Soft Mattress
Though they can seem more comfortable and luxurious, soft mattresses can also be problematic for bed sharers and may actually cause back problems for back and stomach sleepers, and those of a heavier weight. Soft mattresses often promote sinking. However, if certain parts of the body fall too far, the spine’s natural curve could become exaggerated. Since soft mattresses contour so closely to the body, they can also cause overheating. When shopping for a soft mattress, be sure to select one with cooling properties, such as breathable materials.

In the end, it shouldn’t be too difficult to choose between a firm mattress and a soft mattress. Choosing whether one wants firm or soft is the first step toward finding the perfect mattress!
