The Greek word “βιβλίον” (“biblia” in Latin) was used by the compilers of the manuscripts that form the Bible in the time of Roman Emperor Constantine The Great. It literally means “the scrolls”. When scrolls were not used anymore, the word was then used to refer to the format we know today as a book. The word “Bible” literally means “The Books” today. Sometime in the 16th Century in England, the word “good” was added to the definition to emphasize that it wasn’t just any collection of books, and the word was also redefined in the singular. This is where we get “The Good Book” from.

The reason the word “Bible” isn’t in the Bible is simply because they were all separate books and epistles. Some secular historians argue that the purpose of some of the scrolls was to create a historical record of the life (Joshua, Ruth, the prophets) or times (Samuel, Kings, Judges, Chronicles)of a particular time period. And that some of the epistles were actually personal correspondence between Paul and the intended recipient (Timothy, Titus, Philemon). Theologians argue that while that could have been the case, they are still inspired by God. And while the Qu’ran was written by one man in one specific time period, the Bible spans between 5,000 and 7,000 years and different writers.
