STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

ASSENT TO ELECTORAL BILL: NO NEED FOR SABER RATTLING

Some interest groups are cashing in on what they consider a delay in the signing of the Electoral Bill into law by the President to foment civil disorder and muddy the waters.

One can just pity their ignorance of Constitutional requirements, as the President has a window of 30 days within which to sign the Bill, or decline assent, after it had been transmitted to him by the National Assembly.

It is on record that the amended Bill was sent to the Presidency on January 31, 2022, which means that the Executive could do due diligence on it till March 1, as prescribed by the Constitution.

A proposed legislation that has to do with the electoral fortunes of the country needs to be thoroughly scrutinized, and be made as near-perfect as possible.

Those playing cheap politics with it are, therefore, encouraged to hold their peace, knowing that the right thing will be done within the lawful time.

The prostest is going ahead unless Buhari accents. Nigeria's version of freedom convoy loading. A sensible government would just accent the bill and avoid a bigger than endsars protest. But no, they will prefer to shoot people first and then sign it.

Abeg if the content is to help push the selfish agenda of those in office then Buhari must not sign it.

Many of those shouting that he should assent to it do not even know the detailed content in the bill

This is shameful. It is anti-people, and anti-electoral reform. Must the president wait to exhaust 30 days in view of the exigency? Has the National Assembly not done what the president (one man out of over 200 million people) wanted (though generally distasteful to people)?
I think this delay is strategic, and it's not for the good of the majority.

The delay by Muhammadu Buhari in signing the Electoral Bill is due to the electoral fortunes of APC and APC leaders. They only care about their needs. They are afraid of defeat. If Buhari doesn’t sign, NASS is primmed to override him. He doesn’t want to be humbled and humiliated.

The only thing I know is that people now know Buhari is a lameduck president,so wouldn't adhere to anything he says that would compromise their own interest and would start exposing his aboki a rse.
Even those that swore to swim with him to the gates of hell, would soon start rattling on him once their 2023 interest look like being jeopardised or they want to be on the good books of those they feel would be the new power blogs come 2023.
If Buhari feels he is nothing other than a failed, lameduck president, let him come out like Obasanjo did and annoint anyone as his favoured presidential candidate and see if that person would even win Katsina state, talkless other states.

Dear CSOs and Nigerians planning to protest peacefully,

Technically Buhari has 30 days legally. If he signs INEC will only shift elections for few days.

Go ahead with the peaceful protests, it is a constitutional right. But save the best of the protests for after 30 days.

The body language of Buhari and his cabal shows that they do not want the best for the country and will not sign the bill.

The way they speedily signed the finance bill, the NNPC bill and then claimed that faulty parts can be reworked, they should have done it it this important bill if they were serious.

I strongly believe they are planning to reject the bill. Let the upcoming protest be like a warning and start preparing for the bigger one.
