A Bill For An Act to alter the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to allow States generate, transmit and distribute electricity in areas covered by the national grid; and for related matters.

Ayes 298
Nays 2

Ayes have it."

The above is the most fundamental and promising part of the constitution amendment that will help fix the power situation in Nigeria. Let the States have the powers to own or license private companies to generate, transmit and distribute electricity within the States and let this useless national grid phenomenon that has kept Nigeria a giant without electricity end. Commendable.

They should not stop at granting full autonomy to Local Government alone but let LG election be organized by FG or the LG. Create opportunity for independent candidates to contest too
@bolded is very important bcus I don't trust this our governors, they will still find thier ways to manipulate the LG.

The most important things are not being discussed

Restructuring and implementation of true federalism

State policing is the way forward, how do you expect Adamu from Gombe to be the police commissioner in Ebonyi State where he doesn't know the language they speak and their culture

Death penalty for corrupt government officials that embezzle public funds

Let us be glad that they agreed on moving Eletricity, Railways, prison, Airports and VAT to concurrent list. States should start from there, let’s see what changes.

This is a Win for the common Nigerian

Items on exclusive legislative list are items exclusively controlled by the FG...Example: Military, seaports, airports, etc.

Concurrent legislative lists involve items where both the FG & State Government have shared control.

When it's not on either, it is on the residual lists and the FG has no business with it.

Before now, it is not on either the legislative nor concurrent lists, hence the attempt to place it under the control of the FG has failed.

The British gave us a constitution that works for people who are sincere. Ironsi was the 1st to remove the right to referendum and centralize govt after the 1966 coup and when the North kicked them out they changed it further in order to make sure the East has no control over arms and prevent them from seceding, they did this among other ways by creating states, changing the formula for resource control etc.

The best peiod of progress in Nigeria's history was the period when we operated the constitution left by the British. But we are the Architects of our own misfortune, even if they gave us a bad constitution can a serious people not change it in 60 years?

And you are right because there are certain people who if given true autonomy will want to use the autonomy to break away. I dont personally have a problem with them breaking away but the fear of them breaking away by ceratin segments is why we will continue to have a constitution that will never work until the country implodes.

Nigeria's constitutions post 1966 were not designed for progress but to keep the country one at all costs even if that cost is endless suffering!!!

House of Representatives begin voting in the latest attempt at amending the 1999 Constitution. There are 68 proposed amendments which members are expected to vote on.

About 290 members are present.

That constitution should be amended

This is good development. Baby steps move in the right direction.

For the people complaining about the amendments only being about LG name changes, adjust yourselves and read the entire posts, don’t be smart by half as some will say.

Which would work if

1. Said power companies are allowed to set their prices, not the government

2. Nigerians pay their bills and don't bypass the meter or refuse to pay because it is 'expensive '

Resource control will be much better if left in the hands of the community vis-a-vis the local government instead of the state. If VAT should go to the state government, the local government should be empowered to take charge of their resources and send certain agreed percentage in a sharing formula to the state and federal.

This will allow the local communities of (mines, agriculture, solid minerals, oil) develop evenly. And the money sent to the state and federal is provided as loans to develop the potentials of other communities lagging behind.

The Bill was to add it to Executive list, Pay attention Mr Man. Supreme Court will do the final work by supporting states on VAT and that will be case closed.
