HIRING THE RIGHT PEOPLE

Your business is only as good as the people you hire. But you and I know that
hiring is a challenge to majority of small businesses. Finding the right persons to
hire remains a struggle. A lot of business owners get frustrated when hiring. And
it becomes more frustrating when these new employees leave the company
shortly after putting so much in recruiting and training them. While small
businesses complain about their hiring struggles, the candidates are not also
pleased them and their hiring processes where a business owners will be
requesting for the highest qualifications and years of experience but not ready to
pay good salaries in return. This makes small businesses unattractive for them to
work with. My advice is, instead of trying to employ people with hard skills
{certificates and too many experiences} that you can’t pay, rather employ the
ones with soft skills and train them to your expectation and allow them grow on
the job. By doing this, you pay little and still get the same service. Which makes it
a win win for both employer and employee.
As a small business, you may or may not need a human resource department or
personnel because it might be too expensive for you but you must undertake
human resource initiatives in your business even while hiring by looking out for so
many things aside their qualifications. Small businesses don’t have the capacity to
pay big salaries, that's why they are called small businesses However, you have to
be intentional about who you hire and how to manage them to get the most out
of them. Attracting and retaining the right people can be achieved in a small
business when the business is well structured.

ASSESS YOUR BUSINESS
As a business owner you already have a lot on your plate to take care of which
makes it difficult to continually be present to monitor and supervise your
employees in order to get the best out of them. We know that lots of employees
become lazy or lackadaisical with the absence of the owner of the business which
they work with. This is why business structuring is very important. Another
important factor is that it helps the business to achieve more with fewer
employees. Business owners uses business structuring to adjust roles and
reporting lines to enable them have time to focus on other things. Whatsoever be
your reason, follow the points I will be showing you carefully to get the result
which you have always wanted for your business.
Business assessment helps you to find out what the problems are, like.
1. Are the employees in roles that do not suit their experience and skills?
2. Does the work processes contribute to the inefficiency of their work?
3. Is the problem caused by lack of communication and clarity of roles?
4. Do the workers prefer “eye service” to actual work when you are around?
5. Do they lazy around because they don’t work on target?
When you have identified the cause of the problems you will need to use these
strategies that you are about to read in the next page to restructure the business

PRACTICAL WAYS TO STRUCTURE YOUR
BUSINESS

In order to effectively structure your business you have to follow these practical
steps listed below. Write them down and ensure both old and new workers /
employees read, study and follow them through.

1. VALUES AND BELIEFS
a. Vision: A vision is a vivid mental image of what and where you want your
business to be at some point in the future, based on your goals and
aspirations. A vision statement captures in writing, the essence of where
you want to take your business to and can inspire you and your staff to
reach your goals. Make sure you write down the vision of the business for
your employees to understand the things you had in mind before starting
the business in the first place
b. Mission: A mission statement is a concise explanation of the organization's
reason for existence. It describes the organization's purpose and its overall
intention. The mission statement supports the vision and serves to
communicate purpose and direction to employees, customers etc.

Ensure you write this down and get your workers to read and have them at
the back of their minds.
c. Core Values: Company core values are the clearly stated principles about
the organization's vision, mission and principles. This helps to align
everyone around the guiding principles that guides the employees and the
company. As a business owner, ensure you write down these values that
guilds your business and the kind of character your workers should exhibit.
Here are some of the examples of core values you can integrate in your
business/organization.
o Integrity. Acting with strong ethics should a priority for everyone in your
organization as a whole.
o Honesty. It’s not just the best policy, It’s should be a
core business practice for your employees to act in a transparent,
trustworthy manner that earns the respect of their colleagues, customers,
and the public.
o Fairness. Treating everyone with the common decency we all deserve and
expect.
o Accountability. Accepting responsibility for their actions (and inactions) is
the ultimate way to build trust internally and externally.
o Promise to Customers. Creating a great customer experience which begins
with staying true to the words they speak and the things they do.
o Diversity and Inclusion. Organizations succeed by bringing different lives,
experiences and a range of backgrounds into a shared environment where
everyone has equal opportunity.

Learning. No one has all the answers. A culture of humility and continuous
learning is a bedrock principle of a successful business.
o Teamwork. When people work together, they can create something
greater than themselves as individuals.
o Passion. Having a joy not just for the work itself but also the people
around, so that everyone can be bold, innovative, and creative.
o Quality. Companies are judged by the craftsmanship of their products and
services, so the highest standards should be maintained.
d. Culture: Company culture can be defined as a set of shared values, goals,
attitudes and practices that characterizes an organization. It's the way
people feel about the work they do, the values they believe in. Where they
see the company going and what they're doing to get it there. Here as the
business owner you must make sure you write down the way of doing
things around your business, so that nobody does whatever comes to his or
her mind but follow the rules you have laid down
e. ORGANOGRAM: An organizational chart or organogram, is a diagram that
shows how an organization is structured, and how the positions in the
organization are related to each other. Organograms are generally used to
show the chain of command within an organization. Here you must write
down the ranks and hierarchy of positions in your establishment, so that
employees will know who his or her senior is and who to report to when
the need arise, and not bring every issue to you, the owner. Example of
organogram can be different levels where you have the worker – supervisor
– Manager – Director, but this depend on the size of your business but no
matter the size, there must be hierarchy. An employee should report directly to his supervisor not to you while the supervisor reports to you if
that is the chain of command you put in place in your organization. This
helps when you are not around, that means there will always be someone
who will be next in line to take charge and the business won’t notice your
absence.
