The issue of Ukraine joining NATO is an ego thing for Putin. In 2014, simply because the Ukrainian voted in a president who was not his choice, he sponsored Russian separatists in Russian-dominated parts of Ukraine.

Ukraine however should have been reasonable. It should have moved with caution realizing it has a neighboring bully. Joining NATO wasn't a do-or-die policy. This war should have been avoided by all means
