Especially since Zelensky was elected to be in amicable terms with Russia. That's the platform he ran on.

Russia waited 8 years to put a stop to the shelling of civilians. Between sitting on his thumb and sending strongly-worded letters & stopping the shelling, he picked the latter.

The genocide started before the war and that was when most of the civilians died during protests. The rebellion pushed ukrainians out. Even now Ukraine is killing thousands of pro-russiqn civilians and labelling them victims of Russia. They did it in Bucha, in Kramatorsk and now doing it in Izium. They also hide behind civilians showing they don't value their people at all. Russia has withdrawn from several places because the wanted to limit civilian casualties.
