The Hetman Sahaidachny, a Krivak III-class frigate, has been sunk on purpose by Ukraine, with the country's military leaders deciding that this is the best course of action in order to avoid it falling into Russian hands.

As Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine and with forces closing in on the Black Sea port of Odessa, the decision was taken to scuttle the 30-year-old battleship that is now half-submerged in the sea.

"The commander ordered to flood the ship so that the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, which was under repair, did not reach the enemy," Oleksii Reznikov, the Ukrainian defence minister, said, as reported by The Times.

"It's hard to imagine a more difficult decision for a brave warrior and the entire team.

"But, we're building a new modern and powerful fleet. The main thing now is to stand up."

Also according to The Times, the Hetman Sahaidachny had a 100mm deck gun, anti-submarine grenade launchers, torpedo tubes and a helicopter.

Why did Ukraine sink its own ship?
Purposefully destroying the Hetman Sahaidachny was a difficult decision for the Ukrainian army leaders to take, but they couldn't risk Russian forces taking control of it.

While losing control of the frigate would have been a strategic blow in the war, it would also have been a major propaganda win for Russia and the Ukrainian authorities decided that they couldn't afford to let that happen.

What is the latest situation in Ukraine?
Fighters in Ukraine are still following Reznikov's command "to stand up". They're also following the lead of president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who has vowed to stay in Kyiv for as long as it takes to win the war against Russia.

"I will stay in Kyiv, not hiding," he said in his latest video message, one posted on Monday night.

"I'm not afraid of anyone. I'll stay for as long as is needed to win this war."
