So what about if they go through the farmers to purchase it?
Even in our Oil and Gas sector , the local content law is not having the desired effect because all it means is that local entities get these contracts and sub-contract to Foreign companies

This won't work!

How do we distinguish between Nigerians and foreigners?

I guess these foreigners don't include "our brothers" from Niger, Chad and the others.

We like indulging in self deceit.

Can someone please share some light about this
In simple terms, farm Gate means direct access to farmers and their produce.

Foreigners buying from them means:

1. The foreigners control the market price.
2. Farmers can be easily be persuaded into ignoring our local buyers since foreigners can easily pay more and then monopolize the produce.
3. Foreigners are only seeking to exploit the market.

With this, local buyers will no longer live in fear of competing with foreigners who are only out to exploit the market.

Direct local buyers mean uniformed prices and possibly less inflated prices.

This will only give rise to a cabal of buyers dictating prices to the farmers to the disadvantage of the farmers. It's a bad decision taking without due consultation with the real farmers on the field. I'm totally against it. Government should regulate not give rise to a monopolistic behemoth that will rise from this.

So a farmer that should make N1000 will now make N600 because we have a stupid government?

Nigerians about to learn a very hard lesson on "markets".

NO!

Here's how it works: A farmer's produce is worth N2,500, foreigners buy for N10,000 to ward off local competitors. Farmer is happy and then goes home believing he has made some good profit.

Originally, the unit price of the produce should be N5 per produce but since foreigners own the produce now, they set the price to N40 per produce, making an insane profit of N35 per produce. But it doesn't stop there. The foreigners price will always create a ripple effect:

1. Wholesalers buy from foreigners and add their profit to the N40 produce, say they add N2 and sell for N42 per produce to retailers.
2. Retailers then add their profit (say N2-3) as well and sell for N44-N45 to final consumers.
3. The same farmer who was paid N10,000 originally will now discover that his money is useless because a ripple effect has taken place and affected other market commodities. He also joins others to complain about how bad Nigeria is without understanding that he is responsible.

The monopoly foreigners have on the market is unrivalled. And since local buyers buy at the farm gate, they do not have the balls to peg insane amounts on the produce bought at the farm gate.

There is going to be a lot of commodity hording across the world.

China has told their refineries to think about suspending the export of petrol.

Mexico has gone a step further and banned the export of crude and petrol from their country.

Ukraine has banned the export of agricultural produce and wheat.

The world is undergoing a serious economic change.

Where/what is farm gate please?
Farm Gate Price is a term used to value Farm products directly from the Farmer. According to Wikipedia:

The farm gate value of a cultivated product in agriculture and aquaculture is the market value of a product minus the selling costs (transport costs, marketing costs).

The market value is not the same as the price farmers get for their product, as (if an auction is used), the value they get per weight may be well below the market price. In some cases, the value they get per weight may even be below the breakeven price.

English is not that hard na.. cheesy

There is high rise in prices of foodstuffs...Some foreign firms now go directly to farmers to source for their produce rather than wait till they bring the produce to the open market.
For major farms, the sell thier produce at the gate of the farm, rather the usual open market.

This will now cause limited supply to the market even with demand exceeding supply chain..It then means, market women with acess to little supply Will now sell at prices they like with no regulation.

To me, FEC is wasting time...Farmers have become soo comfortable with this situation because it automatically cut of transportation stress and expenses incurred in pushing goods from farm to market.
