Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha is a popular Nigerian politician known for his astuteness.
The former Governor of Imo state and currently a Senator representing Imo West, Imo State was born on the 22nd of September, 1962 in Igboko, Ideato South, Imo State. His background was not so encouraging as he wasn’t born with a silver spoon. In fact, he described his family’s state when growing up as “all shades of grey”. This spurred him into becoming an enterprising young lad. He hawked groceries in Barkin Ladi, Jos.

His story is note-worthy as he did some notable things like;
Buying a Television at the age of 9.
Purchasing a bus at the age of 14.
Becoming the head of a commercial school at 19.
Becoming the proprietor of a school at the age of 23.

He attended Juladeco High School, Jos. He obtained a Diploma in Public Administration at the University of Jos between 1990-1991. In 1993 he returned and obtained an advanced diploma in Public Administration.
Before his venture into politics, he was;
President, Rochas Group of Companies Limited
President/Founder, Rochas Foundation Inc
President of Nigeria Red Cross Society
Pro-Chancellor, African Business School
Former Chairman, Board of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

Rochas served as a commissioner on the Federal Character Commission and also a member of the National Constitutional Conference. With the restoration of democracy in 1999, Rochas competed in the primaries to be the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Imo State but he didn’t get it. After then, he moved to the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). In 2003, he contested as president under the platform of the ANPP and again, just like the previous time, it didn’t fall through. After his return to the PDP, Fmr. President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him as Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs. In 2005, he formed a party known as Action Alliance (AA). His plans were to contest as President under the AA in the 2007 elections. For personal reasons, he returned back to PDP again.

He later left the PDP for the APGA to run as the APGA candidate for Imo state Governor in the April 2011 elections in Imo. Earlier in December, 2010, APGA had suspended him from the party but regardless, he went on to campaign as APGA governorship candidate and won. And though there Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the election inconclusive due to some said irregularities, the final results had Rochas emerging as winner after he got 336,859 votes.

In 2013, he left for the All Progressive Congress (APC) and then contested in the 2015 general elections for a second term in office with the former deputy speaker, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha as a major opponent. The election, which held on 11th April 2015 after the initial date was shifted by six weeks due to perceived security threat. The election was eventually declared inconclusive also. After a re-run ordered by the INEC due to the 79,000 differences between the votes scored by the leading and the second candidate. After the re-run, Rochas won the 2015 Imo state Governorship election.
His move to lead some members of the APGA to form the APC in 2013 was thereafter followed by his being elected the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum.

Furthermore, after his tenure as a two term serving Governor of Imo State, he contested for the senatorial seat at the National Assembly and won. He was issued a certificate of return on 11th June, 2019 and was sworn in on 13th June 2019 by Ahmed Lawan, the Senate President.

Freedom is always exclusively for the ones who think differently.
