Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo and his ministers have cut their salaries by 30 percent under measures to reduce spending as the country struggles with higher fuel costs from the Ukraine crisis and stalled progress on a new tax, the government said on Thursday.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta announced that foreign travel by government appointees, except for critical missions, and the purchase of imported vehicles had been suspended with immediate effect.

He said the government hoped to save around $400 million through the measures.

Global fuel prices have hit all-time highs because of the Russia-Ukraine war, driving up costs of living and transport in a way that has hit West African countries like Ghana hard.

Ghana’s government is also struggling to raise domestic revenue as gridlock in parliament since last year has stalled the passage of a controversial 1.75-percent E-Levy tax aimed at bringing in additional funds.

“It is important to stress, right from the onset, that the difficulties we are facing in Ghana are not peculiar to Ghana,” the minister’s statement said.

“Governments in both developed and developing countries are busily coming out with various prescriptions to bring their economies back on track, after the devastating impact of Covid-19 which distorted global supply chains, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.”

Other measures include a 50-percent cut in fuel coupon allocations for all political appointees and heads of government institutions.

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) said the decisions were inadequate.

“Our immediate response to the Minister of Finance is to state emphatically and unequivocally that he has lost touch with reality, he is not in-tuned with the state of the Ghanaian economy,” the Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu told reporters in parliament.

Recent data published by the Bank of Ghana indicates that the country’s debt to GDP was 80.1 percent at the end of December 2021.

Neighbouring Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is also struggling with the twin problems of an unstable power supply and the doubling of the cost of diesel that many businesses use to fuel generators which keep the power going during blackouts.

Forget party line, APC, PDP or HIV, if a Nigerian politician tries this, he is making multiple folds elsewhere in the government spending.

That can only work for people who have some consideration for the masses. Here, our political appointees and government officials will rather see the need to intensify their stealing by increasing their salaries, number of unnecessary foreign trips and allowances! Very selfish things.

Governance is too expensive in Nigeria is why we would never grow.
Everyone is there to make as much as possible.
Make it less attractive and only people who love the country would contest.
All public office holder must use public amenities.
Their children must go to public school while they are in office. And must stay in hostels.
They must use public hospitals.
Use NEPA and water board ONLY.
Make them use what we are using and watch them fix it.

Our Darling nation should follow suit immediately.

SECONDED!!!

FG should Merge Agencies with immediate effects, to save our darling country lots of billions being wasted (it's overdue) and leave Civil Servants salaries alone..... Okay?

HOW NIGERIA CAN PAY MINIMUM WAGE COMFORTABLY..........

1. Abolish SECURITY VOTE in NIGERIA. Nigeria will pay N45,000 minimum wage comfortably.

2. a) Abolish CONSTITUENCY PROJECT FUNDS
b) Reduce number of ADVISERS to SENATE PRES(2), HOUSE SPEAKER(2), GOVs(4), PRESIDENT(5), VP(2)
c) Reduce current ALL Political Office Holders PAY CHEQUES by 51.5%, without exception
d) Do away with special remuneration to POLITICAL ADVISERS & PUBLIC SERVANTS e.g; Purchase of Private Vehicles, Houses, granting Govt paid Vacations, paying for 1st & Business Class Transportations, etc, etc...
e) Abolish payment of OVERSEAS MEDICAL BILLS for Political Office Holders.
f) Eliminate PRIVATE PRACTICE in public workforce
g) Eliminate participation of Public Workforce in Partisan Politics.
h) Institute EMPLOYMENT BY MERIT, and eliminate UNDEREMPLOYMENT.
i) Review and eliminate allocation of Govt paid POLITICAL AIDES & SUPPORT STAFF to Political Office Holders.

With (1) + (2) Nigeria would pay a minimum wage of N65,000 comfortably

3. Move Nigeria MORE to Private Sector Driven Economy
a) Privatise ALL of Federal Govt PARASTATALS & reduce Federal Direct Funded AGENCIES to 68% of the present.
b) Privatise ALL of STATE Govt PARASTATALS & reduce State Direct Funded AGENCIES to 19% of the present.
c) Reduce current DIRECT LABOUR JOB participation by 49%
d) Encourage more Working Hours until Nigeria economic stabilizes
e) Discourage UNIONISM in Public Workforce

With (1) + (2) + (3), Nigeria would pay a minimum wage of N101,500 comfortably.

4) Institute DEATH PENALTY to proven THEFT OF PUBLIC FUNDS no matter how little, and LIFE Jail Sentences for COLLABORATORS.

With (1) + (2) + (3) & (4), Nigeria would pay a minimum wage of N203,500 comfortably.

GOD BLESS NIGERIA
END OF DISCUSSION!

Madam Chioma Adichie,
We are highly honour that your very first and only comment after exactly 2 years and 9 months of joining Nairaland is to 'totally endorse' one of our posts.
That means a lot.
A better Nigeria is all we want.
God bless you ma wherever you are this early Friday morning!

We Rise.

Tannhauser:

Never thought I would ever agree with you on anything but on this issue you are obviously right. Nice one.
But the imprisonment should include family members and friends. This would encourage whistleblowers.
Interesting.
We disagree to agree.
Everyone has a right to their political affinity.
Know this and know peace ✌️
Stay blessed.

Destinylink:

You made a lot of sense bro, I totally agree with you on this. GOD BLESS NIGERIA
God bless you too Chief Destiny.

Among all the politicians in Nigeria, only Peter obi can do this and force others to do the same.

The rest are selfish bastards who only care about their families and how to holiday abroad.

Before buhari won in 2015, he went to chatam house in the UK and gave a speech.

He said no president should travel abroad for medical tourism or keep many private jets.

7 years later, and he has been an epitome of everything he spoke against.

The people that should him responsible wants to vote for people like buhari.

And you think Nigeria will mysteriously get better.
