Ghana are counting on the massive home support in Kumasi to overturn a 3-1 deficit against Nigeria on Sunday to qualify for the All-African Games in September.

The Dream Team defeated the Black Meteors in the first leg in Benin City two weeks ago, which has sparked some urgency from the Ghanaian side.

Having failed to progress in the Olympic Games qualifier, this is the only chance for Ghana’s U23 side to play in an international tournament.

The fact that they are playing against their archrivals has further increased the home side's expectation but they have to play without some key players.

Captain Andre Ayew and his brother Jordan have been recalled by their French club Marseille for pre-season with Jonathan Mensah and Rabiu Mohammed of French side Evian also unavailable for the same reason.

Nigeria coach Austin Eguavoen will also be missing the services of some of his players as Venlo forward Ahmed Musa as well as Parma of Italy’s Obiorah Nwankwo have been hauled by their teams for pre-season.

Nigeria first-choice goalkeeper Dele Ajiboye is also unavailable owing to injury.

But the pressure is growing on Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah to deliver the good despite the absence of many of his key players but the former international defender is unperturbed.

“The word pressure has never been part of me in my career,” Akwasi Appiah said.

"I always believe when you go into the game without pressure you can deliver your best and win. There is no need to play under pressure."

Nigeria came from a goal down to defeat the Ghanaians in the first leg with striker Nosa Igiebor scoring twice.

The Norway-based attacker, who plays for Lillestrom, insists despite playing away from home they are ready to win the game in Kumasi.

"We know what is at stake, it's a big game and we are fully-prepared for the match," Igiebor said.

"We are in high spirits and we are going all- out at 100 per cent right from the blast of whistle. We need the game and we have what it takes to edge out Ghana.

"I'm looking forward to the kick-off, I have heard a lot of things that the guys in Ghana are waiting for me but I'm not under pressure.”

The winner over both legs will qualify for the tournament in Maputo in September.

16’ – It’s the turn of Nigeria now and Oduamadi breaks away but Masahudu checks him and Nigeria gets a throw in.

15’ – The Black Meteors start another attack with Mpong racing down the right, he beats his marker and sends in a cross but Adiyiah could not connect with only the goalkeeper to beat, This is a glorious chance and Adiyiah should have connected.

13’ – Otubanjo Yusif enters the Ghana box but the ball is cleared. Ghana will launch their attack now but powerful Nigeria defender Emmanuel Anyanwu clears the ball away.

12’ – Ghana attacking again but Latif Salifu loses the ball. The Ghana fans are in raptures and are cheering. Agyemang Badu is definitely the toast of the fans and has proven why the Ghana FA fought his Italian club Udinese to release him.

– Ghana have taken the lead here in Kumasi and this is what the Black Meteors need to overturn the defeat. A good start and they need another one and prevent Nigeria from scoring.

9’ – Inkoom sends the ball back to goalkeeper Agyei and his long ball is cleared out.

7’ – Quick counter-attack for Nigeria and Yusif Otubanjo shoots from 20-yards but the ball went just inches wide. What a miss for Nigeria! The Ghana defence was caught ball-watching.

6’ – Foul in the midfield by Musa Emmanuel, Ghana attacking Nigeria now.

5’ – Cofie puts Latif through and he beats his marker on the edge of the Nigerian box but his cross for the Ghanaian strikers is poor.

3’ – Ghana midfielder Agyeman-Badu is fouled in midfield. Free-kick is quickly taken and Adiyiah is released on the left flank. He sends in a cross but goalkeeper Afelokhai grabs that one on the turf.


2’ – Free-kick gliding in but Mpong heads away for a corner-kick, Nigeria are piling the pressure now in the early stages.

1’ – Nigeria get the match underway.with a long ball to the right and Masawudu fails to clear and it is a free-kick for Nigeria.
