Official languages of the United Nations are Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. Africa is the only continent without an indigenous language representation.

The argument that English, French is enough to represent the African continent is not valid. It does not do justice, not for me as an individual who has spent the last 28 years learning English and still has to write International English Language Testing System (IELTS) that expired in 2 years to get an education or work in many cases in the United Kingdom, and not for the teeming population of the continent that cannot use these languages and has been subjected to a level.......read more https://www.marketgists.com/African-languages

Most African countries don't even use African languages as their official languages. The few that actually list African languages among their official languages (in southern and Eastern Africa) still predominantly use European languages in formal settings. This is what you should address first before going to the UN.

The problem is that the UN official languages cover the most widely-spoken languages on earth. The most likely African candidate to become a UN Language would be Swahili. Swahili has 16 mil native speakers and 82 mil speakers in total. That makes it the 27th most spoken language on earth. It's hard to find an African language that would be as useful in an international setting as French or English or even Russian or Chinese. In a way it's a good thing for Africa - the lack of a lingua franca means African linguistics and culture will be better preserved. In European nations like Estonia, Netherlands, Sweden, etc. it's expected English will wipe out the native tongues in a few more generations.

More shameful is the fact that it's only few African languages with over 40million speakers like Igbo are purely native. Swahili and Hausa are almost half Arabic.
