The senate has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to
declare a full-scale war on gunmen terrorising communities
across the country.

The upper legislative chamber’s request came after Uba Sani,
senator representing Kaduna central, drew the attention of the
senate to an attack on a Kaduna-bound train.

The attack occurred around Kateri-Rijana area of Kaduna on
Monday.

The train was said to have almost reached Rigasa, its final
stop when the gunmen opened fire on it.

Some passengers were killed while others sustained injuries.
While contributing to a debate on the motion sponsored by
Sani on Tuesday, Gabriel Suswam, senator representing Benue
north-east, said the country is under attack and urgent
measures should be taken to address insecurity in the country.

“It is time enough for the appropriate authority to have taken
decisive actions to address the insecurity in our country,”
Suswam said.

“This is the time that we as a senate meet with the leadership
of this country to sit down and talk.”

On his part, Danjuma Laah, senator representing Kaduna
south, said if Nasir el-Rufai, Kaduna governor, is not capable
of solving the security problems in the state, he should seek
help.

“In the whole country, the issue of Kaduna state is the worst.
There must be an urgent action immediately to solve all the
problems,” Laah said.

“If the governor is short of manpower, let him cry out.”
The motion was adopted after Senate President Ahmad Lawan
put it to a voice vote.

In the motion, the upper legislative chamber asked the army
and the air force to sustain their operations on the enclaves of
these gunmen.

It also asked the National Emergency Management Agency
(NEMA) to provide relief materials for the victims of the attack.

8 years ago millions of Nigerians cursed President Jonathan for Nigeria's security challenges. The position hasn't changed today, we're still cursing President Buhari.

With massive land not yet habited, Nigeria faces a scary challenge of ungoverned spaces which needs about 200,000 security personnels to fill and not less than 15 billion dollars allocation for security for the next 5 years (funds must be accounted for).

Another option is filling the ungoverned spaces with large farms, refineries, factories and research centres. However, this cannot be without long term investment in human capital development which is estimated at 300 billion dollars in the next 30 years.

"We always expect miracles as a people", an assertion which corroborates the billion dollar religious sector in Nigeria. It's not magic. It takes time.

The problem is that the government is clueless and full of mediocres. They always want to perform a quick fix and take all the glory and it ends up worse. A typical example is the Nin-Simcard linkage which the government gave 6 months deadline at first. Something that should be done carefully for 10-15 years and backed up with decent border control. It's 2022, have you heard of the Nin-Simcard linkage again? It is not impossible to register and give 200+ million people identification numbers what is almost impossible is doing it in 1 year.

An aspiring President who tells you that all he wants to do in 8 years is to end the almajiri system in Northern Nigeria and ensure that 90% of those children are enrolled in Western schools knows the solution to Nigeria's problem than the one who promises constant power supply, end to insecurity, $1-1naira in 8 years.

The former aspirant would not win with such manifesto, so we are left with the latter politicians who campaign in poetry and govern in prose.

If buhari's relative or child that was killed, would He require the senate to remind him of his duty

As long as the thing nor affect them directly, it's just an issue for gist and a piece of statistical data

Don't they resign for incompetency? You mean not even the governor or the Mr president too.

It's a huge shame to be a political leader in Nigeria considering the many failures recorded.

I wonder how they feel proud about their political positions. Foolishness truly isn't about age alone.

Our elderly men are the cause of Nigeria set backs... Foolish old men in politics

If they are still calling them bandits then they still share ideology as zamfara governor let slip

These are terrorists. Until the government and the north is ready to address them as such and not cover for their sponsors, the govt is complicit

There was a country indeed. Few days ago, it was Kaduna airport that was invaded by bandits. Today, a train has been bombed by the same bandits. They seem to be incharge in Kaduna and other northern states but they are not seen as security threats to the country. If the presidency fails to do the needful to these bandits, the national assembly should do the needful to the presidency to rescue whatever is left of this country. The campaign will soon start but I hope there will be a country to govern by 2023 at this rate of bombardment.
