The students’ debate team of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, has continued to make the university proud in the world of debating, as the team shone like a galaxy of stars in the recently concluded tournament held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka from March 22nd to 26th, 2022.

The University team to the competition was made of 7 students- 6 speakers and one observer. The six speakers include; Ekemini David Abasi, Igwebuike Chiagoziem, Alayande Faith, Nwele Stanley, Oluamachukwu Cynthia and Uchendu Onwe.

In the first timers/novices’ championship, Igwebuike and Ekemini reached the finals of the competition with cumulative points of 477 and 462 respectively, and the former winning the 2nd position in that event. It is instructive to note that the other representatives reached the quarter finals stage, thus were ranked in the top 8 at the competition. They garnered the following points: Alayande (458), Nwele (450), Oluomachukwu (441) and Uchendu (438). The highest point in this category was 482, which shows that all the members of the university team performed creditably well.

Igwebuike also made it to the semi finals in the professional debating championship, thus emerging in the top 10 in the event.

At the end of the tournament, Igwebuike and Ekemini were ranked 14th and 19th respectively, overall. This shows the serious impact made by the University’s contingent to the event in spite of the fact that the tournament was not only meant for university students, but opened to everyone including professional debaters.
