According to the American Kennel Club, as of 2021, the French bulldog is one of the most popular dogs breeds in the USA.

The lovable Frenchie's affectionate and laid-back personality make them perfect companion dogs. Their comical but expressive faces win their owner's affection and even soften the hearts of those who thought that they "didn't like" dogs.

If you are thinking of getting a French Bulldog, here are a few things you should know to know about this lovable breed.

1. They have a naturally short tail and bat-ears

The stubby little tail and bat-ears of a French Bulldog occur naturally and don't require docking. Regarding the ears, Frenchie puppies might initially have floppy ears, but as the dog matures, they will start to stand on their own naturally.

2. They are considered toy dogs, but not lapdogs

Frenchies are toy dogs, which means that they are naturally small dogs. The average height of a French bulldog is about 11 to 13 inches. Toy dogs are often called "lapdogs" as their small size makes them easy to carry around and set on your lap. However, not all toy dogs are lapdogs, and a Frenchie's weight makes it hard to say that they can fit comfortably on your lap. A Frenchie can weigh 19 to 28 pounds.

3. Frenchies are not hypoallergenic

French Bulldogs have short and smooth fur coats; they are not, however, hypoallergenic as they do regularly shed. While you can't stop a Frenchie from shedding, you can control their shedding and keep hair from getting everywhere with proper grooming.

4. Frenchies don’t require too much grooming

Unlike other toy dogs such as Shih Tzu s or Pomeranians, French Bulldogs are a short-haired breed. This means that they are relatively easy to groom and keep clean. To keep a French Bulldog adequately groomed, you must bathe them at least once a week. Weekly brushing with a hound brush or grooming mitt is also recommended to remove loose hairs, promote healthy hair growth, and keep their coat shiny.

5. French Bulldogs require regular but short bouts of exercise

French Bulldog are usually happy enough to chill at home with their owners; they don't need long walks or bouts of play like a Border Collie or German Shepard. They should get up to an hour of exercise daily, which can be broken up into short periods of activity. For example, instead of taking them on one hour-long walk, take them out for a 30-minute walk in the morning and the afternoon. Regular exercise will help keep your Frenchie from getting bored and help them keep their weight down.
