Senate Screening: Take a bow and go

As I write this piece, 14 Ministerial nominees have so far been confirmed by the Nigerian Senate. The remainder is still being expected. Perhaps, they are still undergoing the security clearance by the SSS. I have said it over and over again, Nigeria as a country is one big JOKE. How else can one explain the energy-wasting exercise carried out by these security operatives when no matter what happens, all nominated ministers will still be confirmed.

It is only in this country that the senate will waste prime time on live TV to perform a charade and call it screening. Of what use is a screening exercise when no questions are asked or the nominees grilled? The most annoying aspect of this utter rubbish is the “take a bow and go” aspect of the whole exercise.
We have seen situations in this country where certain individuals who cannot recite the National Anthem are confirmed as Ministers or people who cannot tell the capital of Taraba state are made Ambassadors. These are simple current affairs that my four year old Niece knows like the back of her hand. Such persons should be disgraced out of the hallowed chambers and even persecuted for wasting the time of the senate and bringing shame and disrepute to their families.

Now, to the matter of the day. If you watched the last sham called “screening exercise”, the name Zainab Maina would ring a bell. A lady in her 60's from Adamawa state who could hardly speak passable English. In fact, she made Patience Jonathan look like an erudite scholar. The rockets she was throwing got so bad that the senators started shouting for her to stop. But the lady was so enthusiastic about presenting her CV that had nothing but her political activities on it and kept going on and on.

The Senate President had to stop her and asked her to “take a bow and go”. The whole senate roared yes! So our wonderful honourable ministerial nominee took a bow and left without answering a single question.

Even if this madam is the founder of Nigeria, what qualifies her to be made a Minister? And to think she will be heading the Ministry of Women affairs is even disheartening. This is the time for all Nigerian women to come together and speak against this great injustice. In all honesty, this clown cannot represent the women of this country.
