It’s not uncommon to find yourself asking why your baby cries so much, particularly when you first bring them home from the hospital. Babies cry for all sorts of reasons; some more comforting than others! It can be hard to tell whether your baby’s tears are cause for concern or just the result of teething or a minor illness like the flu.

Use this guide on crying to help you decide whether you should be worried about your baby’s tears and what steps you can take to alleviate any discomfort they might have if they are in pain or distress.

What is crying

Crying is a baby’s way of communicating with his or her parent. Babies often cry when they are hungry, wet, sleepy, sick or in pain. Crying is a healthy part of a child’s development, but crying too much can be harmful for babies.

Babies can cry loudly and for long periods of time. As frustrating as a crying baby can be, never spank or shake your child. Doing so could cause brain damage or other injuries.

Instead, provide comfort by holding and rocking your child until he or she is calm. If you are worried about your child’s crying, contact his or her doctor for advice.

The doctor may recommend speech therapy for an infant who cries excessively due to an inability to communicate her needs effectively.

Why babies cry

Babies cry because that’s how they communicate. They have no other way of saying I’m hungry, I need a diaper change, or Don’t pinch my cheeks! Some crying is normal and to be expected, but babies can also cry for a number of other reasons. Read on for more information about why babies cry and what you can do about it.

Crying is an important part of baby development, so it’s not a good idea to ignore your baby when he or she starts wailing.

Instead, figure out what may be causing your baby discomfort. If you can solve his or her problem, you might be able to stop him or her from crying.
When are babies most likely to cry?: Infants cry more often in their first three months than they do after that time.
